power steeing gearbox

Can anyone tell me if the Bendix power steering gearbox is shorter than the Ford brand gearbox on a 1968 Ford F100. Or are there different length steering shafts for this truck. I am having trouble putting in a power steering unit for my truck. Thanks!!!

I also have a 69 F100 with the Bendix steering box. I bought a rebuilt one 2 years ago and it is leaking again. It is cheaper to use the Ford box (half the price) but the steering column has to be changed.

The Bendix box is slightly shorter than the Ford unit. The steering shafts are different. I put a Bendix box in my '66 using a steering shaft from a '68 F100 with factory Bendix box. Hope this helps.

VooDoo, If memory serves, the Bendix and non power should swap. It is a the later Saginaw power gear that has to have the column swapped in also.

The Bendix box also requires a different (shorter) shaft when converting from the manual box.

Power Steering Gearbox

No luck at the junkyard. Here is the problem I am having. I have a 1971 Ford F100 with manual steering. I am trying to convert it over to power steering. Will a 1968 power steering column work on my truck? The steering shaft seems to be a little bit long. The power steering gearbox is a Saginaw and right for the 1971's. I am not sure if the 1968 column came out of a truck with the Bendix gearbox which might explain it being to long. Can I switch just the 1968 shaft with a 1971 shaft? Your help would be appreciated!!!
Thanks
Voodoo

Here's the article with all the info you need. Modding the existing column is very easy.

Your 68 column was most likely behind a Bendix box because I don't believe the Ford box was available until '69. Just find a column from a 70-72 with power steering and you should be fine.
