Hey guys I'm in need of some help from some diesel gurus. I posted this on another forum and was directed here for some top of the line knowledge. Here's my initial post.
My boss has an '04 f-650 box truck that has decided it doesn't want to start. About a month ago, somebody broke into the truck and stole the radio, the truck still has no radio and as a result no dash or dome lights. I was told by one of my coworkers that it has stalled on occasion since the theft, both driving down the road and while idling. Today, I put the key in the ignition and turned to the "on" position for the glow plugs to warm up. The usual array of lights came on minus the "Wait to start" light I waited 30 seconds just in case it was just the dash light, turned the key to "start" and nothing, not even the click of the starter. I have unfortunate task of trying to fix this tomm, however I know very little about diesel engines. If you guys can give me any steps to take, things to look for, or any websites that my have trouble shooting diagrams that could pertain to this truck it would be greatly appreciated. I'm also bringing my DMM with me to check any electrical issues. TIA
And an update today.
Went out today to check out the truck. Batteries are sitting at 12.54VDC. All fuses that I could find are operational. However, my code reader could not connect to the vehicles ECU. I double checked all of the connections and none were loose, tried again and still wouldn't connect. Right now I'm thinking maybe one of the computers crapped out, didn't want to start taking things apart today because it decided to rain. Anybody have any thoughts on this matter?
I'm pretty good with cars and have fixed just about everything that has come up with my own vehicles. However, I know there's differences between gas and diesel engines, I just don't know where they are.
Don't know if it's a diesel vs. gas issue. Definitely think it's electrical related to the theft. OBD port usually shares a fuse with the cig lighter. Even if the fuse isn't blown, you might still have an open circuit somewhere. Sorry I don't have anything specific, but I'd suggest pulling the dash and seeing how bad they butchered the wiring when the radio was stolen.
When the radio was stolen they disconnected the harness, and antenna from the radio before taking it. I'm almost certain it's an electrical issue as well. However, it's been a month since the radio has been stolen and the truck started the stalling issue about a week and a half ago, now theres nothing. The gas v. diesel issue I'm running into is some of the components strictly found in diesels.
Ok I did a little searching and found TSB 04-23-5. Thankfully for me, others have had this problem and I now have a way to fix it.

The search engine can be a wonderful thing. Glad you were able to find what you were looking for.
Oh, BTW, welcome to FTE, now that you're here stick around. It's a great resource and there's some real characters here too!

Yeah, the thing was I had been searching for a while and for some reason couldn't find anything. Then all of a sudden that popped up and *BAM* found my problem.
Not sure if anyone is going to check this anymore since I believe I've found the problem. I myself do not own a truck. I know But my boss is a big diesel guy. Short list of what he's got.
'03 F350 PSD dually, four full size doors and a stakebed
'04 F650 Diesel, I believe it's an international, 26' box truck
IIRC '05 or '06 E450 Diesel 14' box truck
'07 F350 PSD four full size doors and long bed (I love driving this truck)
I'm his resident mechanic, even though I know very little about diesels but hey that's what the internet and you guys are for right? I'll be around checking out the site.
Oh almost forgot the 3 350's and the 450 all have a bullydog progammer. I haven't researched too much into these programmers, and my boss really isn't happy with the way his '07 has been running since he loaded the tune. Does anyone know anything about these tuners, I'm thinking about getting him to consider SCT, I've seen what they can do with mustangs so I figure they're going to be pretty good with the PSD's. Anyways, HI
Def get rid of the Bully Dog. SCT is the only way to go with the 07. The 6.0PSD responds real well to custom tuned SCT. Run a search for "Eric at Innovative".
sounds like i have the same problem on our 04 f-650 with the 6.0. the motor would randomly cut out while driving then refire on its own and the wait to start light would come on. Now there is no wait to start light and wont even crank over... so does anyone have a link to where these connectors are located?
thanks
JJ
I have been haranguing Ford for quite some time for sub-standard cabling and connectors.
Since you already found the fix... great... I would have directed you right there almost instantly.
I have "fixed" more problems cleaning contacts, reseating and greasing them, and resetting computers (and the infamous Italian tuneup) than the average parts replacement artist.
2004 with PowerStroke: Connectors 9260, 9261 and 6323
9260 & 9261 are on top of the front battery, 6323 is on the left side of the block just in front of the starter. bOn my truck it was the one by the starter.
