U joints maybe?? please help

so heres the deal i stupidly started the truck to warm it up took my foot off the clutch when it was still in reverse so of course it shook and died. but when i went to start it again it started fine but the transfer case popped into 4x4 HI. so i put it back into 2WD. now everytime i shift out of 1st and sometimes into second i hear a clunk noise always right after i release the clutch. and it is a double clunk noise. i put it in 4x4 and locked the hubs the 4wd still works fine. so im guessing its either a clutch problem or a u joint problem. what should i do to determine the problem? thanks for any help.

Have you gone under there and visually checked the transfer case linkage and looked at your U-joints? Do you smell burning clutch ever?

re

well no burning clutch smell, no leaks on transfer case front ujoint has small amount of play very small amount. rear ujoint has no play not sure whats normal with the amount of play. but the clunking noise is getting consistently worse the more i drive. i think its only when i am accelerating in first and second gear. and reverse is not a problem.

If it's only in first and second, it doesn't really sound like a U-joint or transfer case issue. It sounds like a transmission issue.

i was afraid of that... this clunking started only a couple days ago after i did that. but the transmission has been leaking from the front and rear main seals for a few months i have been keeping fluid in it regulary so its never low. thanks for the advice i guess i will just have to take it somewhere to find out for sure.

Check your transfercase fluid level also. Burned one out a few years ago. It had a simalar sound before failure.

ok thanks, also an update for you i checked the fluids in transmission and transfer case transfer case was fine transmission was a lil low but not bad but another correction to what i said b4 the transmission is leaking on the rear gasket and it looks to be leaking from the top rear of the transmission as well. so you are probably right its a transmission issue. is there a better tranny i can put in besides the mazda cuz i have been reading that they r notorious for leaking.

i think my first step is going to be replacing the u joints and greasing the spline just to see what happens. it needs to be done anyways never done b4. if that doesnt solve the problem i will go from there....i will let u know the outcome i should get that done in the next week or 2
