hi folks, been lurking for a while but this is my first post. i have a 53 f100 with 223 and a three speed . i'm gathering parts to swap in a 302 and c4 trans. will the stock driveshaft be the correct lenght or is there a particular one that i will need ? thanks in advance , bill
So Bill, so that has been you lurking around here. huh?
Well, welcome to the site!
To the best of my knowledge, other then picking through a pile of drive shafts with a tape measure and calipers and being real lucky, there is no one part application because each vehicle installation is unique for length. Usually you have the original one from the parts transplant vehicle and just have is shortened at a machine shop, not big bucks.
The trans yoke will be different for the C4 and rear u joint will also have a influence as you will probably be changing the diff (9 inch ford).
i am planning on using the original rear end and i do not have a donor vehicle yet .i was just wondering what other people werte using before i start to search. thanks
I have several driveshafts for 53-56 ford 1/2 tons and may have the right one. I need to know the length to see which it is.
I have a shaft for a 351C and fmx-TO ORIGINAL 56 REAR
Also, a 223 driveshaft for a 3 speed. Also will be getting a 272 yblock shaft with 4 speed to stock rear very soon. A ll are different lengths....most likely.....Bill
Hey guys! I'm putting a 223 with a 3 speed overdrive in my '55 f100 and I'm looking for the right drive shaft and yoke. Sounds like you may have what I need! (3 speed to stock rear end.) Don't know the length yet, but can have that info soon.
When I put a 351C with an FMX trans in my '56 the shaft from the donor car fit perfectly. It was a '73 Mercury Cougar. (Same as Mustang) I used the 9" rear from the same car so it bolted right in. I bet the distance is nearly the same for the stock rear end.
thanks for the info,i may already have one if a mustang driveshaft will work. i was trying to get all the main parts together before i started the swap.
