Rust

While under the rig today, I noticed that there was numerous parts on the drive lines that had new rust patches just forming. This PU has not been driven in ANY WET WEATHER since I have owned it, and we have had no wet weather.

Most of the just forming rust was on the drive lines, 4x4 and main, all universal yokes, and several other places on the exhaust pipes etc.

Is this common? I think the can of WD-40 will come out and a good coating on the rusty surfaces will be applied etc.

I also saw numerous rubber bands holding parts together on, in place on another parts etc. I sure hope this SD is built better than this??? I have a strange feeling about this new beast!

Tia,
Don

Yes, it is common. There are many parts of the truck that are left unpainted. If it bothers you a can of spray paint will solve the problem.

Not sure what you mean about "rubber bands". I have never seems that.

Yeah I noticed there are many unpainted parts, namely driveshaft parts and some of the larger rivets on the frame, etc. I wanted to paint them right off, but too late. They are already got a good coating of surface rust. Dont really matter if they havent seen wet weather, bare metal will rust in front of your eyes lol.

Redford,
I found several places where common rubber bands, 1/4" wide x 3" long had been used to hold various parts together or in place, before other pieces were bolted down or together.

Above the transmission/transfer case areas, next to the floor boards, the heavy Silver quilted like foil blanket is being held into postion by several rubber bands streched between bolts on the bottom side of the floor boards etc.

2 of the bed spacers/donuts had them hanging between the donut and frame rails, then everything was tighten down, along with a couple of the cab mounts and some more on the fuel tank mounting brackets etc.

The only thing I can think of was these rubber bands held these pieces in place as other various other parts were bolted togheter, as most of these rubber bands were pinched between pieces, and or maybe they were hang or check information tags for the assembly line??

Your guess is as good as mine.
Tia,
Don
