Great site, first time post for me....but I need help. I have a 97 powerstroke 2wd, and two days ago I changed a fuel filter on the frame rail (its not a factory one, it had been added afterwards), I didn't do it properly and got an air lock in the fuel system, and the truck stalled. No amount of winding would get it to go, so I filled up the fuel bowl on top of the engine, and pressurised the tanks while cranking....it fired up, and was running rough, after trying to drive it, it stalled.
Since this time I have fried 2 starter motors trying to start it, and all I get is plumes of white smoke....
Here's what i have tried so far,
shorting out the gpr for up to a minute before cranking. (it is 45 degrees celcious here, hottest day on record...so I don't think it even needs glow plugs.
I have checked the hpop level 3 times, its right to the top.
I have oil pressure once it starts cranking
I have 2-300 rpm when its cranking, I even replacedt the cps just in case.
took the top off the fuel bowl while cranking, and it overflows with diesel.
Its trying to fire up, but just won't, and lots of white smoke.....help!!!!
Gully; I just pulled my fuel tank out of my 2000 7.3. Patched it up and refilled it with fuel. It too was hard to start, and it did smoke white a lot. According to the manual this is normal. Yours does sound pecular though; maby just a lot of air in the line? Wish i could help you more. Some times with gas jobs you can turn the key on and off and listen to the low pressure fuel pump do its thing, and that would purge the system. Not sure if that apply's to deisels too or not. Best of luck.
I would think if you are getting white smoke then fuel is not you problem. My 99 done basically the same thing when the soleniod on my glow plugs went bad.It would put out huge clouds of white smoke and would not start. This all happened when the wife ran it out of fuel and I burnt up the solenoid --cycling the key trying to purge the air out of the system.
Also I would think that after you "Held" the glow plugs on that long they are probably toast and not working anyway.
thanks guys for the help.... I can't believe it, but the problem was an external fuel filter...the one I replaced, I bypassed the filter, and the truck started up and cleared its throat of air. The filter was brand new, but not compatable, and therefore the lift pump could not pull diesel thru it. I checked the fuel pressure by putting a tyre pressure gauge on the shrader valve next to the fuel res in the valley, and it was zero. unbelievable!
