I was poking around under my brand new 2010 F-350 PSD planning the route for the aux fuel line for the bed tank and found what I would call a black can or cylinder object.
This can/cylinder is about 3 1/2" in dia and approximately 10" long, thick walled, it is on a stout heavy duty bracket that is attached/welded to the exhaust pipe, and sounds hollow when tapped on.
This can/cyl is painted Shiney Glossly black, has a 1/8" wire rope cable that attached from the can and the bracket only. There are NO OTHER WIRES or anything else attached to the black can/cylinder or bracket.
This can is on the drivers side just above the first cross member, right next to the bottom of the floor board.
What is it and what does it do??? Very strange??? Does anyone else have one???
Oh crap, you found the goverment mandated tracking device!
LOL
I didn't think diesel engines had evaporatve canisters, especially on the exhaust. i would guess it is part of the DPF system, but that is only a guess on my part.
I have the same thing. Mine is on the passenger side, mounted in the same fashion. Only wire from it is actually going to the mount, acting as a ground. So what does it do..maybe the same as one's appendix?
I checked several other SD here in town today for the "Black Can", all these models were 2008 to 2009 models, ONLY THE DIESEL rigs had these cans attached, the gas rigs did not have them.
Maybe Redford is correct, the Govt is keeping track of us Diesel owners???? I sure hope they packed a good lunch, as it is going to be an all day job of tracking.
Well, after a whole bunch of prowling around and lots of questions asked.
I found out just what this Black can does!!!!!!!!!!
It is a anti vibration can, liquid filled and only found the PSD, at certain speeds and RPM's there is some powerfull vibrations that travel down the exhaust pipe and can be heard/felt in the driver cab.
The short piece of wire rope/cable that is attached to the can and bracket are to prevent the can from comning loose and causing damage due to hitting the roadway.
