Alright guys this seems like a stupid question, but I want to pull the front diff cover. All of the bolts are 9/16 except for one. Its a allen key socket head cap screw, I know its larger than an 8mm and smaller than a 3/8 allen key. I dont know how to find out what size the lone bolt is, and guzzlers tech articles arent workin on my comp for some reason. If anyone knows the size of this bolt it would be great.
Here ya go. Right from his site.
There is one bolt on the cover, next to the spring shackle, that requires removal with a 5/16" Allen wrench. I found that it was much easier to remove this with an Allen socket that I had in the toolbox. This bolt is the only one in the cover that has a washer, be careful not to drop and loose it.
All right, well another trivial issue... pulling the cover. Historically I'd just take a chisel or some sort of wedge and start banging it between the diff and cover, and then it would drain the oil and I could pull it off.
Well it seems ford used Super RTV and I'm not getting anywhere with the traditional method. Does anyone have any tricks? I can't get a chisel all around the diff, there just aint enough space. I have a slow drip of oil, but...
If anyone has any other tricks or tidbits of insight please let me know.
I was able to get mine to pop with a small putty knife.
Do you have anything like a carpet cutter? You could maybe get that to the top to start it there. Maybe loose enough in the area of the leak.
