I have an '89 and am looking at a '94. The '94 motor doesn't look the same. He assures me that it's an IDI not the Powerstroke. Does the '94 have a "cleaner" look under the hood? The other thing is that the fuel filter is in the center under a cover. So tell me, Is this an IDI?
The fuel filter is in the center under a plastic cover. The turbo is on the back of the motor and feeds into a small "Y" pipe that is also in the center under the plastic cover. The injectors and glow plugs are hidden, compared to my '89. The owner says its not a powerstroke. But I don't think its an IDI either.
If its a powerstroke, id reckon that it would have powerstroke diesel on the side, but I dont know for sure. You can tell for sure by the VIN number. Post the VIN and we can tell you for sure.
1994 thru 1996 Power Strokes had 215 HP.
Parts cost much more than IDI parts do.
With the computer control, the engine control is more complex.
I just was looking at IDI injectors in the last couple of days, under 30 dollars each for new ones.
Power Stroke injectors cost about 150 dollars each.
Every once in a while I toy with the idea of a Power Stroke since it is capable of more power than an IDI, but when I start thinking about how much money it would cost to get that power out of it, I just can not justify the expense.
The early Power Strokes had a couple of the same problems the turbo IDI did.
Smashed down pipe
Exhaust to small
Restrictive muffler
Restrict
Yes this is a Powerstroke. I have spent most of the night looking for pictures of this engine. I think Im gonna pass on this one. I kinda like being able to work on it my IDI. Plus, I don't want to buy a Powerstroke from first year they came out. Thank to those that replied. I really appreciate your help.
i thought i wanted a powerstroke myself, until i found this truck.the low mileage peeked my interest,so i learned a little about the idi...i didnt have much time.just discovered it to be a very good motor in general.thats all i needed to hear.
then after the purchase i discovered the HUGE price range difference in parts.
im very happy to have found the idi.left me some money to do upgrades with.
very easy to learn them thanks to all the members here and our great mod Dave!
i just cant wait til i find a decent dump bed i like for the $ i like too.
IDI is the best bang for your buck no doubt.i don't blame ya,for passing the PS by.
good luck in your searching for your next IDI truck!
the 94 turbo idi has a metal filter housing and has the word turbo cast into it and does not have the round air cleaner.the powerstroke has a plastic cover that says direct injection in the middle of the motor.
