i didn't want to thread jack so i figured i'd start a new thread...
i have a 1980 F-150 with holes in my exhaust and pretty much a rusted out exhaust.
my question is what would be a good setup? I'm thinking of going true duals with headers. So piping from each header all the way back with mufflers and exhaust coming out behind the rear tires...haven't researched mufflers let but i'll hit up youtube for that.
would true duals with headers give any performance boost without any y or x-piping?
Long tube headers with duals don't fit very well. If you are concerned about ground clearance, I would stay away from headers. They hang down low below the transmission. And on the driver's side you have to make a decision; Either run that pipe across and down the passenger side, or run it under the frame on the driver's side and make it come out in front of the rear tires.
If you keep the stock manifolds and your y-pipe is ok, you can get them to split the y-pipe and run both pipes up high along the passenger side, and then split them back up behind the rearend to come out each side of the rear bumper.
ok thanks...i just know the pipe right now going out of the right rear tire is rotted and has a few holes...and the pipe that extends up and to the front of the truck is in pretty bad shape too...not to sure how the y pipe is
well once i get it registered for cali it'll be good for a year and then i'll move to ND and they don't have smog or inspections there...from what i've heard...so i might change the exhaust after it's fully registered...what then?
so i finally got a good look at the entire exhaust...and not only is the tailpipe rotted....but so is the muffler and parts of the y pipe...if i replace the whole exhaust would it be a good idea to get rid of the cat?
do i really need it if i have a muffler?
also what inch diameter piping would you recommend? 2.25? 2.5? or 3?
hey got to lmctruck.com, look up your truck, i got a complete including headmen turbo mufflers true dual exaughst system for $230, and they bolt to the stock manifolds, true dual and they dump out behind both rear tires, really nice system

Sounds like a decent system Petroskie, as long as the OP hasn't considered making his exhaust system hisself?
no i'm not making the exhaust myself...i just ebayed everything and found a y-pipe and muffler there...
still not sure if i should keep the cat or go straight pipe
Cat or no cat? That depends on whether or not you need it to pass your local emissions. Being in California, I would say you do. If you are seriously going to move to somewhere that isn't going to require the cat, and if you can get by with the cat you got or whatever for now and not need it again later, I would say don't waste money on a cat.
Petroskie, did your exhaust system come with cats?
Mine didnot but i choose it that way you can get it with the cat for X amount, Look at the laws in cali you may be able to grandfather your truck in, in washington you can do that if its an 87 or older vehicle you dont have to have emissions
or best and cheapset idea, just run open headers for a while, lots o fun and the 5.0L scream, i did it for about a week, makes you go deaf. did you hear that ring?
i'm moving to north dakota and once i get the title in my name from cali i'm registering with ND...so no...i won't have to worry about emissions control then...
i was looking at more exhaust videos and i like the sound of SLP loudmouth...but they are expensive...magnaflows are looking tempting as well...
so right now it looks like true duals with a X pipe and either magnaflow or flow super 44...
