I can get a set of gt40 heads for 50 dollars off an explorer. My question is,will they bolt on my 97 f350 with a 351 without any major modifications or problems? Will it be worth the trouble if I have the heads ported and worked over a little ? Not sure if I need any special head bolts to put 302 heads on a 351?Or if they will work with my stock intake. Thanks in advance for any help.
If there GT-40's they will bolt right up. But if they are GT-40P heads you might have problems with you headers bolting up and getting plugs in there. I know there is a header made for mustangs to put the P heads on but i dont know about the trucks.
GT40 heads flow 20% better than E7's.. so yeah they're worth the trouble without any rework. Besides boring the head bolt holes out they are a direct bolt on.. no other special parts needed.
Well this helps out a great deal.So Conanski, what If i had the intake ported, would this help or am I better off just getting a new one?Think I'm gonna get these heads tomorrow then.Does anyone think I will have a problem with my accessory brackets like the power steering and alternator bolting on the same? Thanks for the link too, worst case if I don't put these heads on,I should be able to make some money off of them and best part is there are 4 more sets just begging to be yanked off.
X2. Once you start flowing more air through the engine with better heads the stock 5.8L intake is the next bottleneck. Then manifolds, then cam...never ends. As part of any upgrade it's a combination of parts that will net you the best gain.
I'd have to put the cam at the front of that line up, it's a great TQ producer but it's really limiting horsepower production.. even with the stock heads and intake.
Paying somebody to port stock parts is money wasted IMO unless you're building a sleeper, better aftermarket parts are available for the same or less money in most cases, but there are some easy DIY things that can be done. For example you could port match the lower to the heads with a dremmel or die grinder and carbide bit. On most stock intakes the ports narrow excessively as they approach the gasket surface and it's a pretty simple job to remove some material from the last inch of the runners to maintain a consistent runner size through the transition. This will maximize as cast flow potential which is in the 300hp range believe it or not.. provided there is enough cam and exhaust on the motor.

302s and 351s use the same accessory brackets and bolts so everything will bolt right up. Also while doing your intake, you may want to consider port matching the heads to the headers.
Thanks guys.Since I'm in no hurry think I will do all the work myself instead of paying a machine shop.I'm not really looking for a huge leap in hp,I just want cheap hp and i figure porting the heads and intake is a lot cheaper then buying a set.Especially for the 50 bucks I will have in the heads,as long as they are not cracked or anything.
If your not going to go the cam route, then you may want to consider going to a 1.7 rocker ratio. It'll let the geads flow a little more air with the stock cam.
