rear diff noise in reverse

rear diff noise in reverse
I have a '02 SD 5.4 auto 4x4 w/ 122,000 miles on it and the last week when I am in reverse at low speed weird plastic on metal rubbing sound, "wheent,wheent wheent", comes from the front of the Rear diff. I noticed that on the front of the diff there is a plastic piece that moves in tandem with the drive shaft and it seems that this is where the "wheent" noise is coming from. This noise ONLY happens when in reverse. Anyone else ever have this or no what it is. I've searched all over here and can not find anything for info. on this.

WIth the tranny in neutral and the parking brake on (be careful to chock the wheels too), see if the pinion is loose in the differential. Sounds like the pinion is moving, which is NOT GOOD.
In other words, the gear in the front of the differential is loose. If that plastic piece is moving enough to rub, something is not right.

Yeah I checked for play. I thought at first it might be one of the joints in the drive shaft but everything is tight and seem no different than any other truck I've owned. It is weird the truck drives no different. There is no slip in the tranny or rear and this sound only happens in reverse. Everthing seems/sounds normal until I back up. Now I did notice when I back up a hill or slight grade and it is under load it does not do it. But as soon as it is on the level or down hill it makes this noise.
