Ok I am sure someone has done this before but here it goes. I have an 89 5.8lw with 8600lb axles not sure what the gears would be in this. I think it is 8600. Also with a 5spd. I was wondering how I could get the best gas milage and horsepower gains. specifics would be good to brand names, exct. open to anything. Would it be possible to get 14 to 15 mpg with this set up thanks.
It is a F250 custom. Yeah I believe it is the c6 5 speed. Just don't know what to do either rebuild it try and get the best mpg I can or swap for a cummins. I just don't know what would make big differences beside long tube headers and exhaust.
C6 is a 3-speed automatic, 5-speed would be the ZF manual.
A 5.8 should get 12-14mpg anyway when operating properly as long as you're not redlining it in every gear. Exhaust will help too as will 1.7 rockers. Get all your other problems cleared up first beofer adding performance parts.
so look at motorcraft copper plugs with .50 gap, ford 9mm wires and confirm/set timing to 12*btdc with spout connector removed. and of course new cap/rotor. change fuel filter if its been awhile and service both front/rear diffs if its been awhile and keep up on the oil changes and use a wix, motorcraft, purolator oil filter. dont use fram.
keep proper tire pressure and dont drive like a wild man.
a cummins swap is possible but understand the swap is around $5k US dollars and that might not even include the motor.
Yeah I really like the 5.8 I think I am going to do allot of research see what kind of projects are out their and spend that money on a rebuild from the block up. Any ideas on combos like compression pistons, heads, cam, ignition system, I want to do this right and see just how much mpg I can get out of this motor. I would not even mind going to a newer 5.8 to get rid of all that air injection crap. My truck has hoses everywhere keep them coming lol. I love the feel and stance of this truck.
Yeah just went to the junkyard and got two TPS, and a EVP for twenty bucks. Tommorow I will try and get them in. It only seems to buck at idle and when I let off the gas.
well you havent told us what the differential tags say for gear ratio. also why are you needing sensors? generally used sensors are not the way to go. also dont go changing sensors until you have pulled codes . Ford Fuel Injection has instructions.
Ok just checked the tags its dark out so hopefully this is right one set says v131c and looks like 0 10 2 9806 kinda hard to see on the door tag it says c5 axle 8800 GVWR TRANS W. Just a couple things I am working out got code for the TPS, and EVP. Got another thread for those problems. Truck seems to be bucking when I let off the gas a up and down idle to the point were it will almost die. Do those number help let me know if they do not make sense.
C5 is 4.10 limited slip which is great for pulling power but not so good for milage if you go more than 65mph. Larger diameter tires will help milage in this case.
How big of Tires can I go before it decreases millage. Anyone or place I should talk to about building a super fuel efficient 351 with some power, or tips going from the block up. I have also thought about going to diesel in this truck but I am sure with a ground up build and some good info I could get some great gas millage.
What kind of gallon are we referring to? A Canadian (Imperial) gallon is 160 oz while a US gallon is 128. So getting 14-15 miles to an Imperial gallon is like getting 12 miles to a US gallon. Shouldn't be so tough.
I'm asking because I assume you live on Vancouver Island, B.C., Canada.
Malfunctioning antipollution stuff can lower mileage a bunch.
yeah hopefully I will have the EGR figured out this weekend. I am not to sure about the air injection seems to be working. Yes I live on vancouver Island. I would like to see it get at least 14 after I build the motor. I need to get some bugs figured out first though.
FWIW.. I always imply US mpg when I mention it on this site, my 5.8 was returning 17+ US highway so it is possible to get good milage. A cam and exhaust is all it really needs for this.
As far as tires go step up to 265 or 285's but don't forget to recalibrate your speedo.
Does your air injection system vent to atmosphere after the engine warms up now?
