Speedometer is off

So i have a 98 f150 and i found out that my speedometer is off 5 miles an hour at 70. does anyone know can this just be fixed by programming or does it need a new gear in the transfer case.
PS it has the old mechanical odometer.

i have had it unhooked several times..... no difference, but i did have it in to the ford garage in my town and they told me it was either programming or the gear in the differential and i would rather not spend the money to have the back end tore apart if its programming i will have it reprogrammed otherwise i will live with it.

i believe the older 97-98 trucks are mechanical and have a gear. The newer trucks are digital and can be programmed. If your dealer dont know what you got, i would not have them working on it.

Are the stock size tires the ones it came with?

My 97 has the stock size 17" tires, but it was built with 16"s.

I had to change the gear on the VSS.

It changed by 1 tooth.

I believe 97 & 98 are VSS gear driven speedos.

My truck had tires & wheels changed by the previous owner.
Check your door sticker, it will show the original tire size.
