Hello every one.
About 1 month ago I had some rear end work done on the 08 F 450. They replaced a carrier bearing and a part of the eaton locker. At the time they said ever thing else in the rear end was good INCLUDING THE RING AND PINION GEAR. They had to re do all the shims and every thing in the rear end. Now 2,000 miles later the rear end is making a whining noise and I brought the truck back to them. Tonight I talked to them and they say it needs a new RING AND PINION FOR $1,800. How can a rear end go bad in 2,000 Miles????????
Sorry if I seem pissed but I am about to loose it.
Do you guys think that they messed up when they put it back together.
Nick
sounds to me like they did not do the job right. Just my unqualified opinion. I don't see how it could go bad either if they filled it with the proper lube.
I agree sounds like they didn't check the wear pattern with a dye. I would make them eat the damages, or at the very least the labor, but if they didn't shim the first one right, you could be right back in a couple of mths. New gears have to be shimmed and wear pattern checked too.If they won't warranty their work I think I would find a shop that does.jmho.
I have have had the same problem @ 112k the rearend started chartering at the dead stop takeoff. Ford dealer charged me 2100.00 to replace all of the bearing and slip plates it went out 30k again they fixed and shop warrantyed low and behold it going out again. i think ford has a problem.
I 'd wager they messed up the pinion depth or backlash when they redid it. OR, they put the wrong fluid in it. Did u see the ring & pinion and are they missing teeth or damaged? Some of these will whine if they do not put the fluid with the limited slip additive back in it.
i gotten to know the diesal guy pertty, ford put a motor in at 50K and warranted it same guy did the work. he said that he would do the work on the side
I'd ask to see the old gears and get a picture if possible. You would have to look and see where the gears were rubbing together on the teeth surfaces. If the wear patch on the teeth is off to one side or the other they caused the problem and should pay for the entire thing.
Like you said if they had the gears out and had to reset them it is almost 90% sure they messed it up.

I agree with this assement. Need to have it done at a gear shop that has a good track record.
