Jan '10 Hot Rod Mag, on the newstands, has their "Drag Week" featured with some great Fords--a '66 Fairlane 351W in the 12s, and a "new" 585 CID SOHC motored '64 Galaxie running mid 9s. Plus a (Duramax) diesel Mustang. Sure, it's mostly Chev-centric, but most of the Chevs at least have a 9" Ford out back!
But they also have a vintage motor showdown.
Shelby hi-po 289 vs. the 365 hp 327.
The 289 actually made 302 hp, pretty close to the stock Shelby claim of 306. The Chev was 356, with a little more torque. Some differences from "stock" and still "gross hp" probably, but....
1969: Boss 302 vs. Z28 302.
Both rated 290 to fool the insurance man, the Ford makes 372 horse and the Chev 356 with a touch more torque over a wider band than than the Ford.
1970 351CJ vs. Lt1 350.
Chev rated 370 horse, the Ford 300. On the dyno, the Chev made 353hp/392tq vs. the Ford's higher/lower 365/379.
1971 Boss 351 vs. LT1 350.
Both rated 330 horse that year, on the dyno the Ford outpowers the Chev again at 383hp/391tq vs the Chev at 359/376.
I graduated highschool in '71 and always thought the 351CJ and Boss were weak sisters compared to the 427s and 428s but they look pretty good now....
I drove both these cars with 302 there is no comparing them the chevy 302 was very slow all top end,a note you no your old when you have owned all the engines in the post before lol

They (both the Chev and the Boss 302) just seemed slow on the low end. 1/4 mile times compare favorably with the 396 Camaros for the Chev. The Boss 302 numbers compare favorably to 390 and even Boss 429 (stock of course) numbers.
The SBC is a really good engine, but can't touch a Cleveland in all out competition IMO.
Were you not watching Pro Stock in he 70's? LOL!
For an engine with such a short life span they have certainly made their mark. Properly built engines with Cleveland heads are a force to be reckoned with even today.
