Here's what I can figure out between my '77 and '79 books ( I don't have '78s, so this might not be completely accurate, but the stuff I've included is the same in both books, so I think we can assume '78 would be the same, but you never know...): V.i.n. - F61= F600. V should be engine code, but it shows a Cummins 855 c.i.d. diesel, which sounds unlikely. A should be assembly plant, but my books don't show an A code assembly plant. The rest of the v.i.n. is the sequential number which would show the build date, if I had '78 books. Wb 176= 176" wheel base. col M = white color. type f616 = 24,000lb G.V.W.. body gag = black vinyl interior - crew cab. trans M = clark 285 direct 5 speed transmission. Axle e3m =e3= Eaton 16244 17,500lb rated 2 speed axle with ratios of 6.50 and 9.04. m = 7,000lb front axle w/ power steering. dso 26 = New Orleans ( original order destination) gvw 2400 = 24,000lb gvw That's about all I can figure out, hope it is helpful.
