Another A/T tires thread, SORRY

Sorry, I'm sure this has been discussed multiple times, but I couldn't find much on the specifics. You guys have seen my truck, 2 of my tires are due for a change. So I'm thinking long term and going ahead and buying new rims as well. Since I respect what all of you guys say. Which A/T tires are the best for the money and looks. I'm leaning towards terra grapplers since they are cheap but I've heard they wear out fast? And also I want to stick with 33" tires since I only have a leveling kit, so are 20" wheels too big for 33" ? Should I get 18? Thanks to all of you for welcoming me here.

I powdercoated my factory wheels to get a fresh look and still be able to buy "cheap" 16" tires.

I'd recommend (off personal experience):

1. Uniroyal Liberator A/T's in 285/75R16 from WalMart - under $700 out the door
2. Hankook DynaPro A/Tm's in 265 or 285 from Discount Tire - $800-ish

i have some 16x10's on my truck and i love them, if i were you i would look into maybe some nice 16's to keep the cost down on tires as well as 18's or 20's but its your truck and im sure it will look good with whatever set up you decide on.

Stay away from the Terra grapplers if you tow very often. They have worn very bad on the back of my truck in under 1 year (7k miles total, rotated at 5k) I'll never buy Nitto's again. Their warranty is worthless. I'm thinking about BFG AT's. Around $800 for 10 ply's from tire rack.

michelin ATX 285/75 16 for me. Go to tirerack.com or similar and do some research on wet, ice, wear, etc. I like these tires but at about $1k they ain't cheap.

I think I would stick with the 16X10 wheels if I were you. That way you keep more sidewall, and you get a better ride. For the sand down in your area the BFG's will do good. Get the E rated version, and air down for floatation if needed. If you go up to an 18" wheel you loose a lot of flex in the sidewall. 20's with 33 inch tires look( and ride) like solid forklift tires IMHO.

I am serious about getting these rims, (diamo karat 17) 18x10 and powdercoating the all black. And I do like the look of the procomp extreme AT's that are showed here as well. A good setup? His are 35's I'd get 33's .. Thanks for all the input.

i really disagree with a blanket statement that "terra grapplers wear badly". there are way too many factors to consider to make an assumption like that. what size rim were they on, was it within the approved wheel width's? what kinda load is placed on them, were they at proper psi. etc, etc. on my dad's 2005 f350 SRW King Ranch with 18's, he has over 60k on 275/70r18's and he is HORRIBLE about rotating them. he has probably rotated them twice. there is atleast 5k miles left on them. I didn't get but 35k on my truck with frequent rotation, but I ran at max pressure alot, cause I was too lazy to air up and back down when not towing. I know of several guys that have gotten 50k plus. The place i buy my tires from RimzOne (Wheel and Tire Packages from Rimz One featuring Nitto,Toyo and XD Wheels) recommends the Nittos for an AT and the Toyos for a MT. they have stated that typical mileage, given they are mounted on an approved rim size, is around 45 to 50k. so i would not hesitate to buy them again if I were to go back to an AT. however, I LOVE my Toyo MT's and won't put anything else on my truck.

I got my 33" BFG A/T's for $150 off craigslist(yeah i know thats hwy robbery, lol) and even sold my old 265's for $125. I also added the 2.5 rough country leveling kit and a 1" add-a-leaf on the rear. Very happy with the results. I'm going 305's or maybe even 315's next time around.

Well, when you go back to the dealer for a warranty claim (excessive wear). And, they try to get Nitto to honor their warranty to no avail. You kinda get a little upset... My dealer did offer me a different set of tires at a discount, so cheers to them. After that, I will go out of my way to steer anyone away from nitto.

I wouldn't go bigger than an 18" rim. Much bigger than that with 33s and it will look too lowriderish if you know what I mean.

hey I understand, I just don't like a statement like that about any tire without knowing what size tire it was, what rim size, load, E rated or not, etc. I could easily say that BFG AT's are the biggest piece of crap tires (and in my opinion they are) since I never got even 30k on either of the three different vehicles I had them on. I guess I just don't like generalizations. Each and every circumstance has a different set of variables. I chose to put 305/75R16's on the absolute minimum width of a rim as approved, but I certainly didn't expect to get great mileage, or anywhere near that which I would have gotten if I had put it on a wider rim, that didn't squeeze the tire to the point that the center had a crown. My brother in law has a duramax with the teeny little 6.5 inch wide rims, and complains about his tire wear. Hell, he could put michelins on that sucker, and would still get absolute dogcrap for mileage. The wheel width makes a HUGE difference in mileage, among other things.

Not trying to be argumentative by any means, just expressing my feelings about any generalization, I mean I'm sure some people could make the argument that our trucks are pieces of junk. If those said persons failed to maintain their vehicles, and follow specific maintenance guidelines, they have no reasonable expectation of any longevity. It's all good. BTW I do think it is absolute horsechit for any tire manufacturer to have NO MILEAGE warranty whatsoever.

I run E rated 265/75R16's on factory wheels. Thanks for the heads up on the BFG's. I've only had one set and they were 33" mud terrains on a 79 F150.

Cool. I thought you had oversized tires on stock rims. I wasn't really pleased with the BFG AT's , and actually had better results with the old style mud terrain, but I know plenty of others are. I do like the looks of the new Mud Terrain KM2. May talk my dad into trying them, or maybe the nitto trail grappler. kinda cross between mud terrain, and an all terrain. looks very similar to the toyo mt, but a few bucks cheaper.

Actually buddy.....

Huck runs 04 XLT wheels which were factory equipped with 265/75/16 D rated wheels. So he wasn't running oversized wheels and the fact that nearly everyone upgrades doesn't mean it should wear that bad. I know he stays on stop of his stuff and it was just a crappy tire. Check some facts
