390/ T-5 Combo?

Will this work? I don't know a whole bunch about engines as of yet, but

I've heard of people mounting small block trannys to big blocks before. I've

also heard that if your not careful with it you'll burn the clutch/tranny out

in no time at all. I really, really, REALLY want a five/six speed but don't

want to spend the 3 grand for a T56. I did some hunting and saw that

Speedway motors has a Big block FE to T5 Steel Bellhousing (I've included

the link below).

Ford FE 352-390-427-428 Steel Bellhousing - T5 & TKO

Will this work if I leave the T5 stock or will I have to rebuild it with HiPerf

parts? It will be going behind a rebuilt performance 390 in a '73 F100 with

a 9" posi rear end. I will be abusing it because I haven't driven a

standard in a few years, I'm 20 and therefore, I like to go fast.

The main drawback with the stock T5's are the torque ratings. 85-89 was 265 ft lbs. 90-93 was 300 ft lbs. Z spec in the Cobra T5's were a bit better at 330 ft lbs and up to 450 hp. FE's have torque ratings from 352 ft lbs in the 352 to 401-427+ ft lbs in the 390's stock. The torque of the FE will shred the stock T5 in short time. You can get a World Class T5 or Tremec 500-600 series. So yes you'd need a built up trans to handle your needs.

Brent @B2 or Mike at Fortes can hook you up with everything at a decent price.

The T5 will live behind a healthy motor provided that the driver doesn't beat on the tranny. 3rd gear is the weakest and a heavier vehicle will of course be harder on transmissions. There are plenty of Mustangs out there ~3500lbs making 500hp that are still using the T5. There are also ones out there that grenade a T5 with not much more than factory HP. It all depends on the driver.
