Hi everyone, My truck wants to ping when I am pulling my trailer with my tractor on it. I tryed premium gas, that did not help.I also set the base timing, it still does it. It does have a vacuum leak I noticed, when I start it , there is a whistle sound until it warms up. I am thinking this might be my problem ? Is there a common vacuum leak problem on these motors? 1995 f 250 hd, 5.8 motor, e40d trans ,123000 miles Thanks ,Jeffro
Common vacuum leaks are everything attached to the manifold. Seriously, every rubber and plastic vacuum hose are suspect as well as the reservoirs/components they are attached to.
When was the last time you changed plugs/wires/cap/rotor? Have you tried pulling the codes to see what the PCM thinks is wrong? How did you set the base timing and what is it set to?
If it is making a whistling noise it should be easy to track down the source.
Spray a little carb/choke cleaner on and around the vacuum lines while engine is running and listen for a change in engine idle. That should lead you in the right direction for tracking down the leaks.
Seriously, tracking them down on these trucks is much easier than it was on my Mercedes...took 3 months of weekends to find and repair them all just to get the car running properly.
