I've run Uniroyal Larado 235/80x16E on my truck since the factory tires vaporized. The Larado's have always rocked, for some reason however, I have the urge to put on some Pirelli Scorpions (They have great reviews at TireRack)
Anyone here have words of experience and/or wisdom concerning the Scorpions?
I actually have looked at the Destinations. The problem with the Firestone's is, unless I've gone blind, there are no E rated 16 inch tires until you get to a 285 section and I'm afraid there maybe problems at the front end on tight turns. Also at the 285 size I'd be paying over $200 more for the Destinations than the Pirellis for no real purpose. ($133 each vs $186 each). Not saying the Firestone Destination is not a great tire however.
i run Pirelli Scorpion A/Ts on my F250 psd. i have drag raced with them and gone mudding with them too. dove the truck through a stock tank that only had about 6" of water in the bottom. found out that in 4th gear in the mud my 2wd actually chunks mud pretty good!!! haha. covered a buddy of mines truck at the top of the tank and got through just fine. haha. they did pretty good on the drag strip as well. i do have issues with them spinning when i get on it in 2nd gear, but if you check out my sig you can see the torque of this truck will do that to most any tire other than drag slicks. haha. on the strip they grip real good though.
I like my pirellis. i'm not a good one to give you mileage off of a set b/c for some reason my back tires go away pretty fast... but they are very good tires. i bought mine simply b/c of the reviews that tire rack had and ended up very happy. they do better off road than the mud tires i had before them. haha
Had an Excursion as a work truck that had Scorpions on it until I traded it in. All I can really say about them is that they never let me down, but I could say that about BFGs or Generals as well. Got a lot of miles out of the Pirellis, but again, same for the others. I don't know what the Pirellis go for these days, but I think they are on the high end of high. I prefer BFG, General, or Cooper in that order.
my pirellis from tire rack were cheaper than the kumhos that my brother bought for his pick up awhile back and even my back tires lasted longer!!!! haha. just saying kumho tires suck in case anyone was wondering. i have for some reason never liked cooper or general. BFG has recently changed their rubber compounds which pulled their longevity wayyy down. still a good tire, but a some guys that i know that used to get 60-70k miles outta BFG A/T's now only get around 35k miles...
I did not know that about BFG changing their tires. My last set was on a Jeep Wrangler and they were looking like they may get that many miles on them as well. Had to trade that thing in too, so I never saw how many they actually got. I'll keep that in mind though. Interesting about the price of the Pirellis as well. I always thought they were more than that. They were on the truck when I got it, so I didn't pay for them separately.
Yeah you are right about the Destinations...my F250 has a leveling kit in the front end....so I was able to fit 285-75-16 on there so far so good. My brother just purchased a set of General Grabber AT2 and so far so good.
On the other hand my buddy has pirellis on his truck and after only 8 months the tires are shot.
Just keep researching and you'll find exactly what you want

i guess your buddy tears on them a lot b/c everyone i know who runs pirelli A/T's is getting around 65k miles out of them. i have about 20 miles on my back tires. they are still in decent shape through all the 3rd gear burnouts, drifting, drag racing, etc. i'm not easy on tires.... hahaha
i work at a tire shop and everyone that comes in with the scorpions hates the hell out of them. they wear out quick, unevenly, and are expensive to replace. i have BFG AT/KO's on my truck and couldnt be happier.
Don't know what y'alls problems are with the pirellis. i have had mine for awhile and i pull more loads than most any of y'alls f150's will w/ more weight and they hold up just fine. and my tires are load range E of course. i have had my experiences with BFG and i personally didn't like the A/T's. they tear apart if you put a trailer behind them. i will be using the KM1's on my F150 b/c they are good mud tires and i won't be pulling loads with it.
fishforlife, my tires are wearing evenly all the way around, i believe they are cheaper or very very close to BFG A/T's, and i have seen multiple sets go more than 60,000 miles. not sure why y'alls customers are having problems unless their front ends are terribly out of alignment forcing the front tires to wear faster and unevenly so when you rotate them it makes them all wear fast or they just aren't rotating them at all.
i just noticed i put 20 miles earlier when i meant to put 20k miles. haha. i got 20k on this set of tires. you can tell im hard on them, but if i was to drive sensable for the rest of the tires lives they would likely last to 50k. im good with that.
