Very dim milage meter (sometimes)

'99 Expedition, 161K miles-
Milage under the speedo worked when I picked it up Friday. (new to me)
Today it didn't seem to work,,, then it came back bright.
Went out tonight for a short run and it seemed not to be working again. Then I notice (in the dark) that it was actually working,,, just very dim.
Been raining all day,, thought something may be getting wet? But all inside is bone dry.
Don't know where to begin on this one. At first I thought maybe a fuse, but since it goes very dim, then comes back I doubt it's the fuse.

Any ideas?
I did a search but I guess this isn't a common problem.
Thanks for any input / ideas.
Gary

The odometer going dim or blank is a technical bulletin. If I remember correctly the reason for the problem was a bad solder connection on the back of the dash panel. My truck has the same problem, it doesn't bother me that much, as long as it comes on every now and then so I can check the mileage. The only way I know to fix it is to replace the dash cluster, in my opinion I wouldn't replace it until it goes out completely.

first off , i have no idea why manufacturers decided to go with digital mileage knowing very well it's so easy to hack , plus the added display problems down the road .Everytime i went to a dealer lot , and them turning the key on just to show mileage , i kinda just rolled my eyes thinking somehow ......this can be so easily hacked .

Interesting day.
Went to the dealer about the parking brake. Spoke about the milage lights.
He said this was a big issue. Mentioned the procedure shown here and he was all for it. I just sent him a copy of the above post & details.
Maybe he'll fix mine for an experiment? One can only hope.

I'm glad to see a dealer being proactive by taking interest in trying to fix the part instead of replacing it, like is so common with most dealers. That's the way a dealer should treat their customers, by doing what they can to try to save you money instead of just ignoring the cause of the problem and making you buy a new part, when the one you have is easily repairable. Be sure to let us know how everything turns out for you.

Having sent him a copy of the fix,, he decided to give it a whirl. (I really didn't think he would - thought he'd blow me off) Said it took him about an hour, but the next would be much faster after being familiar and knowing exactly where to look.
3 Days now,,, and doing fine.

Note;
NOT a Ford dealer,,, an independant. Probably makes a difference?
Parking brake cable rotted & broke. Said there was a "Kit" for the brakes that he installed.
Also replaced rear shocks - they were kaput!
Good dealers are hard to find - new buy (first 7 days)= No Charge

Not a Ford dealer, I knew it was to good to be true, anyway I'm still glad they gave the fix a try and that it worked out for you. Thanks for letting us know.
