typical Ford PS whine

94 F250 XL 5.8L. I'm wondering is there a way to upgrade the PS pump so it doesn't sound so bad? It hasn't failed yet, I'm just wondering if it's worth the effort to upgrade to a stronger pump?

The upgrade is to swap in a saginaw style pump. If you search saginaw ps pump you'll see lots of info. I have the same year and motor and did this swap and it is miles better. Simple, stronger and silent.

I did the saginaw pump conversion and i worked great, the only problem is that they are getting harder and harder to find.

Look for a late 80's bronco, and get it through napa if you can, they are the A1 cardon pumps.

I'm in the process of doing this conversion & found this to be true. The only 2 local vendors that handle Cardon (the only valid part # I had, 20-6244) were Advance & O'Reilly. I tried searching NAPA for Cardone & got nothing. Checked price & availability (none in any local stores) and they were quite different. Advance: $49.99 + $30 core, O'Rielly $76 + $45 core. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
<o></o>
The kicker is that when I went to the closest Advance & gave them the # to order, it came up as not a valid part#. They could not explain why it was valid online, but not in store. So I called up the Advance 800 order line.<o></o>
<o></o>
Gave the guy the part # & of course he wanted to know what it was going in... Any way after some time being put on hold a couple of times from the monkey wrench I had thrown into their well oiled gears. I got the pump ordered. They would not ship to local store, only to me. (free shipping at least, over $75) Of course I can't send the core back since its not exact match.<o></o>
<o></o>
It came in Fri & I've done a rough check. It mounts nicely to the support bracket. Shaft diameter is the same & protrudes through the face the same distance. Monday I'm going to a local hydraulic shop to see about matching existing hose to pump rather than trying to get the original (bronco?) hose. <o></o>

You can modify your existing bracket; or better is to obtain one from an E-Series with 302/351, circa late 1980s to early 1990s.

Great stuff

Thanks for that info/pics are great! The only thing I was unsure of from your installation steps is, which bracket did you end up using? Did the truck one fit, or did you have to swap for the van? Any mods to the bracket to make sure the pulley lined up on the belt? And I imagine you got that pump from a salvage yard, but do you think it's possible to get a new OE Saginaw pump for a van, and put it on the truck? Thanks again - great post!

I used a junkyard van pump and the bracket that came with it. It is a direct bolt-in. The pulley lines up just fine. I think that you could use a van bracket and then buy a new pump for the van. But, as others have stated, you can buy a new saginaw style pump that fits the truck bracket. I just don't know much about that.

The swap only took me a few hours. Most of the work was trying to get the hoses adjusted. You will be very happy with the results, I promise.

I have a question, since this seem to come up alot. Why is everyone so concernced about the noise the power steering makes?

All of my Fords have done it and I don't even consider it an issue. Its just a slight noise.

Am I missing something?

I have a 95 150 with the IL6 in it. Would I still use the saginaw and bracket from a 302/351 van? or would I have to get a 300 il6 bracket?

Does anyone have a website that has the pumps that bolt up the truck brackets?

I'm not sure what your truck sounds like but mine was LOUD. Honestly, it sounded like the hold of an old freighter, creaking and groaning.

Its not so much of a problem when your driving or you have the radio up but its enough to wake the neighbors otherwise the saginaw is supposed to be more efficient and powerful as well I think.

By the way Tex... Your truck looks mint. looks like a labor of love

What fluid are you using in it? Power steering fluid or trans fluid?

If you use the right fluid, automatic transmission fluid it won't make any noise.

If you, or someone before you, put "power steering" fluid in it it will screech and squeal to no end.

If it has ps fluid in it pull off the pressure line and let it pump all the fluid out, refill it with trans fluid and the noise will be gone.

Provided of course running the wrong type fluid hasn't already done permanent damage to the pump.

Only time I/we ever had to upgrade to the Saginaw pump was when running very large tires.
For stock'ers or even slightly larger tires the standard "ford" pump is quite adequate for the task, and won't make any noise if it has the right fluid in it.
