This is on my Wife's '06 5.4L Expedition. It just had both cats replaced and the dealer replaced Plugs 5 and 8 because of P0305 and P0308 being thrown. The service manage suggested replacing the rest of the plugs and quoted $300, with the ubiquitous "if all goes well". I told him no thanks and that I'd give it a shot. Now I've read all the treads on the plugs and have read the TSB. So, I gave it a shot this afternoon. I think I broke the first one I tried. The plug just spins in the cylinder. I CAN tighten it back down, but it just won't come out of the the head. Is it broken? Do I have to break it further to get it out?
That's what it sounds like to me. Most have had the best luck letting the carb cleaner soak overnight. I wouldn't even attempt a plug change on these rigs without having the 65600 Lysle removal tool on hand before starting.
I let it soak over night in the hopes that is would soften up enough to just be pulled out. No luck. Any one have any ideas? I'm not able to get a good enough grip on it with my needle nose pliers. Anyone know of a tool I can use to pull it out?

double jointed pliers blue point 913djcp i think kd gearwrench has them also. if u use the glue in style of extractor u need these to pull the electrode out of the porcelin
I ordered the lisle tool, it will be here in a couple days. However, I thought it was only to push BROKEN porcelain that is flush with shield. I have the whole porcelain piece in there, electrode and all (mode 2 condition according to the tsb)
bigtime, thanks for the lead on the pliers, I'll give them a try.
My best guess is that I have to either pull really hard on the seperated plug or use whatever leverage to force it to the side and crack the porcelain in hopes of using the lisle tool. I've got it soaking in motorcraft carb cleaner and it's been soaking now for more than 24 hours
@#$%!, these things aren't budging AT ALL. I've been soaking the #7 plug for well over 24hrs in the Moto carb cleaner (smells like seafoam and bug spray) and it won't budge. I've got my torque wrench set to 35lbs and nothin! ARRRRRGGGGGGG!!!!!
To add insult to injury the place I ordered the Lisle tool from let me know it's back-ordered until December! Double ARRRGGGGGG! Going to have to ebay durnit.
As soon as I get through this I'm going to change the ones in my F150 while I'm still around 40K miles.
I've done 24 plugs now, broke 1, all at 40k ish, Believe me...it takes WAY over 35lbs to get one turning. closer to 55-60, or better. after you've made a complete revolution, that could take a long long time, but after that, it goes faster. Move one a Smidge, let it soak, move to another. move all 8 a smidge. then repeat. I have not used the Lisle tool but by the way these guys praise it on here, it may be easier to just snap them all off with a big breaker bar and then push and pull them out? tool has to be tight on the back 2 I'd think.
....the fun continues...
I got #6 with some long reach pliers and it is separated with the porcelain still in the ground shield. I got #7 to turn a "smidge" at around 45ft-lbs. Re-soaked it in the carb cleaner. We'll give her another smidge turn tomorrow after work. I've got a feeling I'll be dragging this thread out until after thanksgiving. Happy fricken holidays
Just be patient and keep your cool and you'll get it done. I've done a lot of work on these newer vehicles and got frustrated and had to walk away for a few hours to regain my composure. It's amazing how much that'll improve the results.
Bridge the people have it in stock.they ship same day.To dallas shipping and tool was 78.00 .I just sent them an email telling them what service they provided.
Copy and paste..good luck.
if you can get the ceramic out you saved a step. But dont waste to much time on that.
This what i've read in other post.1 guy used a real heavy fishing line to pull the center piece out.Another guy said he got tried of trying to get the darn thing out so he took a 1//4 socket and it broke off. Then he used the punch that comes with lisle tool.
I soaked number 7 overnight, turned it a smidge, let it soak, turned another smidge...so on and so forth. Seperated. I hope the Lisle tool shows up in the mail tomorrow
