4R100 shifter slop.
4R100 shifter slop.
I pulled a 9,500 pound back hoe in some hills yesterday with my V10 E350.
It pulled it great, but there was one hill that Was so steep I pulled it in first, 3/4 throttle to hold the 25mph speed limit.
Going down the other side, The shifter was at 1 but the tranny was in 2.
It was on S turns with 15 mph signs, and I had brake fade fairly bad by the time I got through them.
It has been slowly getting worse and now it is so far off It wont go in at all.
How do I adjust it?
I am towing a truck down this same road and need to fix this first.

This is what my Ford Wordshop manual says for the F/EX. Hope it's the same for the E.
1.) Remove the upper instrument panel steering column cover.
2.) Place the gearshift lever in the (D) position.
4.) Center the pointer in the middle of the (D) position.
5.) Remove the three pound weight.
6.) Carefully move the gearshift lever from detent to detent and compare with transmission settings. Readjust if necessary.
7.) Install the upper instrument panel steering column cover.

2.) Place the gearshift lever in the (D) position.
Rotate the gearshift lever clockwise until it bottoms out (first gear), then rotate two detents counterclockwise ((D) position for the 4R100 transmission). Rotate the lever three indents counterclockwise (D) for the TorqShift transmission.
3.) Hang an three pound weight on the gearshift lever.4.) Center the pointer in the middle of the (D) position.
Rotate the thumbwheel located on the bottom of the steering column to adjust the pointer.

I had the same Problem Bill, I could not find a column for less than $350 for my truck. I was winter & had to plow our lots so I got a universal floor mount shifter for the 99 F250SD has been in there for 3 years & works great. I wonder if you have enuff room in the van??
Those steering columns are problematic to say the least...

look up under your dash where the colum is and if you follow the shifter cable up you will find a bracket that has two torx bolts in it. they probally are loose or one fell out like my dads did and its causing all your problems. take them up lock tite them and youll be good to go
The cable is under the lower steering column cover and will be just a knurled **** that you can spin. This adjusts the indicator needle (orange) for the transmission. Instead of a 3lb weight I just pulled down a little on the shifter arm with my hand. Then I moved it through several positions then checked that the needle was centered. If not, I adjusted a little more. Takes about 5 minutes (most of that is trying the get those long screws back through to hold the column together).
If your handle is loose, then the adjustment is at the transmission housing. I need to do that too, but haven't done much research on it yet.

The boot was like 4.5" x 6.5" Looks kinda cool too
There is a little slide mech. with a lock nut in the middle of the trans linkage. Just figure out which way it has to go & give it a couple clicks to that position. Do not loses the nut more than you have to. There are little interlocking teeth every 2 mm aprox.
Mine had slop too, but it just made it so that sometimes the truck thought I was still in gear and I couldn't get it to crank without pushing up on the handle. Plus, it was really hard to place the positions. The torx screws on the back of my shift were still tight so that wasn't the problem. Come to find out, it was the whole shifter, shift tube and plunger, and shift tube bushings assembly that was worn out. I got the parts I needed for under $100 from the dealer and they had every last part in stock. Supposedly, it's a common problem and they said they normally sell two or so every week! Anyways, it tightened it all up good and after I adjusted my cable down at the transmission (it involved alot of tweaking since I didn't have the shop manual), it worked like a charm. It was UNREAL! Make sure to use plenty of lithium grease when you put all the parts together and it'll work like it came outta the factory! Hope this helps... I can post pictures of all the old parts I took out if you like.

OK, I'll do that. I don't know when, but hopefully sometime before lunch. That sloppy shifter gets old, that's for sure. It was to were I relly couldn'd feel any "positions"... kinda aggravating.
