Hey guys I'm new to the forum and would love any help I can get.
A few months back I bought a beautiful 1974 F250 off craigslist after my car bit the dust. I drove it around for about a month and the 2 barrel carb crapped out. I had planned on eventually put a 4 barrel on it anyway so I wasn't that upset. Well one thing led to another and I ended up pulling the motor and having it rebuilt. I'm now trying to get it all put back together. Ok here is some basics on my Truck: 390 motor, C6 tranny, 2WD, single cab, long bed. I put an Edelbrock performer intake and Edelbrock 600 cfm carb. The machine shop put an RV style cam in the motor and I don't know anymore than that. I added a set of Flowtech headers and I'm planning on going with an MSD distributor.
Ok now here is the problem.I purchased the linkage adapter to hook the passing gear rod back up to the carburetor. When I tried to connect the passing gear rod and the throttle rod on they were just grinding on each other and where not spaced out like they were on the 2 barrel. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong or if the carburetor is just not going to work. I would appreciate any help.
Im not sure on the older trucks but from reading your post it seems you have a rod for the throttle instead of a cable. I am using that carb on my 460 but I have a cable for the throttle and it rubs a little on the trans rod but still works. Id see if you could adapt a cable throttle from like a 78 or 79 ford to work. Other than that Id say look at Lokar for some help. They make all sorts of linkages. Good luck sounds like its gonna be a fun truck with that fresh 390
Edelbrock has an adapter for the old style kickdown that eliminates that issue. Edel part #8011
I tried that before and it didn't do what I needed it to do. Your best bet is go with the Lokar kickdown cable kit. You can get em anywhere that sells speed parts, I got all mine through Summit racing (part #LOK-KD-20C6 for black. Add "HT" for braided stainless steel). I've installed 4 of these cables so far, 2 in these style trucks, 1 in a '79 Bronco, and 1 in a '76 Lincoln. They come with all stainless steel or aluminum hardware, and decent instructions. Never had a problem with any of them since the day they were installed. They cost about 65 bucks (for braided stainless)+ the $24 recomended spring/ bracket kit, but are well worth it. Replaces that clunky old rod altogether. Great product.
