To all- I could use a little help on electricity again. On my 70 wagon, the lights seem to flicker. It reminds me of my 71 mustang with a radical cam in it at idle- not spinning fast enough to charge or like running an underdrive pulley on a newer Ford. But it will act like this at idle or going 40. What would be the cause of this- bad alt or something else? How do I trouble shoot?
Don't know anything about later Bronco's, but I would imagine it's the newer style. The older ones were mechanical and it's a common problem with them. Your ampmeter probably fluctuates if you watch it.
Yep- That it does. The one off the 79 has the same wiring- it just looks flat- same as the one for the F series using the dura spark in the 79. while I have you on here- can you provide me with your opinion on Bronco transmissions. I have a 4 speed out of a 79 truck in my Bronco- so basically a three speed- 1st is a creeper un syncronized. The rear gears are out of a 77- 350. I am trying to make a daily driver and the transmission gearing makes this thing like driving a tank. I was never a automatic guy, but had a 79 Bronco with a C6 that drove nice. does your truck have a C4 or three speed- are there any drawbacks to the c4- is there a manual tranny that I can find out of the bone yard that would bolt up and make it more driveable- say 5 speed out of an early 80s?
Nothing wrong with the C4. Just pick up one from a early Bronco. Three speed would be fine also. Lot of people remove original tranny's and put in what you have for off-roading. Check Classicbroncos.com in the classifieds. You should be able to make a good swap with someone. If you have a 66-77 Bronco, that site is a must to be a member of.
thanks for the tranny advice. Replaced the voltage reg tonight with the 79 reg, solved the flickering lights but the alt gauge is all over the place even in the discharge which did not happen before. How do I tell if I am getting a charge? I am assuming I can use the VOM to test somewhere?
