just wondering what the guru's choice is for flushing transmission lines and coolers is. i have seen the little fix a flat like can of flush in a kit. someone said to use brake cleaner then blow out with shop air.
For a normal transmission fluid change I would agree with quicklook2. But if you are installing a new/rebuilt transmission, that is a different story. I would rig up a pump of some type, flexible lines and a filter to run fresh trans. fluid through the cooler and lines. Unbelievable the amount of stuff fresh trans.fluid will dislodge. I fell victim to poorly flushed cooler/lines when I had my C6 rebuilt several years ago. It lasted ~ 20 miles before the stuff sticking to the cooler/lines dumped into the rebuilt transmission. It was not a pretty sight or smell.
sorry for the confusion, i meant to type that i am replaced in smoked tranny with a fresh rebuild. i have no way to tell what went wrong with the previous one so just to be safe and clean i want to flush the lines and coolers.
its been a really looonnnnngggg day or i would have posted that too.
Personally, I don't think you need to worry about the lines. Just run some clean fluid through them. What quicklook said about the radiator is more important. If you are really concerned about it, you could just replace the radiator, especailly if its old.
I tend to err on the side of caution. Only cleaning the trans cooler is like cleaning only the toilet when it is the drain line that is causing the backup. Talk to a good transmission shop, they clean the lines and the cooler.
I'll add to Texasguy001's response with my opinion, if in doubt replace the lines too.
Also, per Ford's recommendation for a rebuild install, put an inline filter in the return line between the cooler and the transmission. That way, any nasties that get pushed out of the cooler will be caught by the filter and kept out of the transmission.
