Yeah, I thought it was interesting too. I think they said it had to do with the shape of the hole, or the angle it was drilled through the jet, something like that. Diameter wasn't the only factor.
$5 - $7 dollars sounds about right. The trick is to find a local auto parts store that carries them. Just happen to have a Schucks (Kraggen, Checkar, depending) that has a speed shop in it with all sorts of performance parts. It's the only place that carries anything like it. Other than that, I'd have to order them all on the net.
Yeah, that was making me nervous for a while, but it was pretty cool to have the 4bbl pass emission on the first attempt. Says a lot!
Please excuse my ignorance, but don't stock carbed 300's have an O2 sensor in the exhaust pipe right near the manifold? Couldn't I just cut the wire off of that and rig it up to a volt meter and have a working O2 sensor gauge? or would cutting that wire just lead to screwing up my crappy 1bbl feedback system?
It depends on the year. My '81 didn't have an oxygen sensor. I don't *think* they were added until the feedback system since only computers would have any need for one.
If you had one stock, then yeah, you certainly could use it. I wouldn't cut the wire though, or you'll mess up the computer. Just splice the positive into it from the voltmeter, but leave the wire intact.
OK, to start an argument...why don't you guys use a 2150? Much better carb than any Holley, easy to work on- and some had an altitude compensator- if you need that.
I got my carb kit and put in new gaskets yesterday. I changed the jets to 51 while I had it apart. The truck ran really lean, when cold it almost died a couple of times.
I was wrong in my post when I said I had 54's in it, there was 57's in it. I changed the jets out today to a set of 59's I had and it ran a lot better. Has more power and runs better.
I have everything ready to put a O2 sesnor in the exhaust to try and tune the carb better than just going by how I think it's running.
I got 5 days off so hopefully I can get the O2 sensor put in and tune the carb.
hey abandoned bronco what kind of trans is that 4sp with the overdrive i have an old granny 4sp andmy goal is too get the best mpg possible and it always seems like my rpms are a singing at 60mph and also whats your mpg with the 390 setup ? is it better than the stock carb ?
300 Workhorse,
I'm gonna interrupt Abandoned Bronco's reply for a moment. You seem to have the same running gear that my F150 has. Got a 300 w/ 435 and 4.1x gears. Put a 2150 carb on it, and recurved the distributor, get 15 or so for mileage. Heard the overdrive guys get 18-20mpg. If you can get 3.08 or so gears, you can utilize that tranny more. Bump 1st gear at lights and have lesser rpm's at 65.
A Dodge truck I have got 1.5 mpg's better w/ a 4.1x to 3.2x rear end change. This truck also has a 435, and these were the shallowest gears I could find for a matched set of axles. Just remember that a Ford 300 is NOTORIOUS for torque, so don't sweat something like 3.08's 'cause I'm gonna put in 2.7x's in mine this spring.
If you slightly build the 300, you won't even feel the highway gears. There's plenty on this forum for cheap and easy 300 increases.
The Offenhauser 4-barrel intake is a good intake and putting a 2-barrel to 4-barrel adapter will only let this manifold act as a "balanced" dual port- which they're making plenty of nowadays.
Was there not a guy on here not long ago telling some 2 bbl guys to get a 4bbl?
Smaller primaries-better milage. Secondaries for when you want power.
With a 2100/2150 your driving around on your high-flow primaries all the time and sucking gas.
Besides, this thread is about the Holley 390. Don't be trying to hijack the thread to preach to us about a 2150. Just a friendly reminder

The trans I have is the 4spd SROD.
1st: 3.25
2nd: 1.75
3rd: 1.00
4th: 0.75
With a 3.00 rear and 30" tires (measure around 28"), I'm at 2000 RPMs at 80mph. Used to get 20+ mpg at 65, and around 16 - 17mpg at 75.
The 4bbl is still in tuning stage, so no bragging rights numbers yet.
