i have had a set of GOOD 302 (89 model) efi heads given to me.. but im building out of a 302 that is the old flat tappet style of engine and running an edelbrock intake.. can i still bolt the heads to the block and intake to the heads.. or will this be a waste of time to attempt... or will there just be a manifold that i need to buy to complete this..
and if they will fit will they be any better than the old style of heads that came off of the 81 block??
They will fit the older block. But you are going to have to get the right pushrods for the setup you have. I am assuming the 89 heads had the bolt down sled rockers. But it was probably a roller cam engine, so those pushrods will not work. You will probably want a 79-84ish push rod to work with a regular cam and the sled rockers.
Make sure you check the intake gaskets also. The engine kits give you two sets, and if I remember correctly, you will want to use the later style intake gaskets with the later style heads.
but what am i needing to do to be capable of finding what length of pushrod i need to use?? and will these efi heads be any better for performance than the heads i originally took off of the engine?? and is the cam im going to put in this block effect what i am needing to use for the push rods??
