Anyone tried to set cam timing on a 1986 F250 with a 460 with the motor still in the truck? I have done a cam swap with the motor in the truck but am not happy with my choice of cams. Also if the dots on the cam and crank gears are mis aligned by about half a tooth is that a enough degrees out that it would make a noticable difference? Thanks for the feedback.

You should be able to degree a cam in the truck, maybe pull the rad and a valve cover... I've never done it but I'm sure its possible and I think if I had the dots out a little like you do that would be the firsst thing to check
Thanks ctubutis, I had a cam lobe go flat and replaced the cam with one suggested by the builder that doesn't come on until 2000 rpm. In my truck I am doing 35 mph by then and the performance up to that point is "muddy". Maybe it's a combination of cam profile and timing that has me unhappy with the way the motor runs. I also don't know if the timing gear set is the retarded version. Trying to decide if I can get by with just retiming the cam or going ahead and putting in a new cam too.

Thanks also bashby. I was worried I might not be able to get a good view of the degree wheel. Hope with rad and grill out I can see it straight on for a good accurate read.
