ok so i recently purchased a 1976 ford f150 and want to throw the front end under my 1995 150 i need some tips on the swap or ideas where to get kits for an even simpler swap
go to the offroad section and search "1/2 ton SAS guide" ... and/or "My SAS"...i think there is another recent SAS or two in there, search button is your friend
dont buy kits...they use cheap **** and theres no guarantee it will work in the first place never mind make it any easier, no matter what every SAS is different in some way
mines got an SAS and it is simple enoght....mainly all bolt on....actually averythings bolt on exept my panhard bracket to the frame is welded.....but i need to redo it. jus use everything from your 76
does the 76 have discs or drums? i THINK that was the first year or discs which would be great...the pre 78 axle housings are stronger than those of the 78/79 years because on the 78/79 the wedges for the "C" bushings is cast so its part of the axle and where those wedges are there is actually no axle tube there which creates a weak spot...on the pre 78s there is tube all the way across and the wedges are welded onto the tube, bye bye weak spot
this way you can also cut off those wedges and run leaf springs if you want...
my SAS was with a 75 d44 and it had the drum brakes...all i did was swap the knuckles, spindles, caliper brackets, and calipers onto the 75 axle from a 78 axle, worked out just peachy
so when you went to drill your radius arm brackets, you just compressed the springs with the jack under the axle, then marked the brackets at full compression?
and would my 4in lift coils off of my current ttb work for the lift?
one last thing would disk brakes off of a 2wd that year work?
change the brakes you do not want drums up front...everything bolts on from the 78 axle then you can use the hub and rotor off the old TTB axle
you have to compress the springs before you drill or when you set it down the axle will push forward, but when i did it i had to big stands under the front frame horns and a jacked it up just a little of those stands and put axle stands under the axle so that everything would sit level
you can make them work but it takes a good bit of fabrication from my understanding id go with springs for the 78/79 if you can return the TTB springs you have
the brakes from the truck you are SASing will NOT work...for brakes on the SAS (since yours has drums) you need the 78/79 knuckles, spindles, caliper brackets, calipers, and pads...the hubs and rotors can be reused from the TTB
if you browse over those links i posted there are pictures
ok so compress springs, mark brakets on the frame, then drill the holes
i just wanted to double check how you marked up the brakets for the radius arms on the frame.
so its easiest just to buy 78 79 4in lift springs?
by far from my understanding...plus with the lower bucket/adapter thing you would have to fabricate you would wind up with about 2" more lift so the 4" coils would net about 6" lift
yep...like i said you need the springs to be compressed to ride height because if they are not and you bolt em down the axle will push forward when you set the weight on it and that can cause issues obviously
