Parking Brake

My parking brake, on my 92 F150, seems a bit loose to me, it has felt this way for a while. I also have a 95 F250 and the amount I need to push the parking brake pedal down for the F150 is A LOT more than the F250. Also, when parking on steep inclines with the F150, I notice the parking brake doesn't have enough pressure to hold the truck in place.

Should I replace the cables on the F150, they do feel a bit loose when the brake is off? Is there an adjustment I can tinker with, something in the brake drums maybe?

On the driver frame rail just at the back of the cab there is an adjustment for your cables.

Don't see it. I can follow the cable from where it leaves the cab all the way down to the bracket where it splits in two for each rear wheel and then on to each rear wheel. There is not adjustment anywhere.

I think I have what is called a self-adjusting parking break but I think the cable is too long (from stretching over the years) to grab enough.

1991 was the last year there was an adjuster for the cables.

All you have on the frame rail is a bracket that the front and two rear cables attach to.

When you remove the rear drums there are cables for the slack adjusters that hook to the pin at the top, run around the side, and then hook to the stop plate for the pinwheel. Replace those cables- it made a big difference on my 91 when I did.

I am familiar with all the parts that NumberDummy and DBFrif91 mentioned, but just not sure which one, or ones, to get. Is there any way to tell which would be the best to replace?

The parking brake cable can stretch over time, but it depends mostly on the brakes being adjusted properly. You can make adjustments manually to the slack adjuster. I always jack up the rear end of my truck when I have to do this, tho I believe if you really know what you're doing it's not necessary.

There should be an oval rubber grommet plugging a hole on the inside of the wheel assembly. Remove that and use either a screwdriver or a brake spoon to move the adjuster up or down [can't remember which way exactly right now] until it won't move anymore. At this point the brakes are fully expanded inside the drum. Then using a second screwdriver [smaller than what you're already using] push the stop plate back and back off the adjuster until the wheel spins freely.

And don't forget this works best when the truck is in neutral. It can be done in gear but it's easier if it's not.
