I am looking at purchasing a 1992 Ford F250 from a private party, it has 207,000 miles, they said they recently replaced the transmission(I have no idea if they did or didn't) and I don't know how they drove it, it has a 460 EFI and E4OD transmission and I have a couple questions.
They are asking $3,000.00
Anyway my questions are:
How long will the 460 EFI usually last, if it's been being treated badly and how many does it usually get if it's been being treated good?(miles)
How would I know if they replaced the transmission?
How long does the transmission usually last? (miles)
The transmission is hard shifting(I don't know if that's good or bad for this truck.) How many miles will you give it before it breaks down if it's hard shifting?
Also, how many mpg's will this truck get around on highway/city?
Also, do you have to have the same tires all around the truck if it's a 4x4 even if the 4x4 isn't in use, in order to keep it running good?
Thanks.
well i can tell you that my truck which is a 92 f150 with a 351W EFI and E4OD Tranny (which is what is on the 460 also) has 204000 miles on it and still running strong. so IDK
I can't make a generalization, but my boss's 88 F250 has just about had it at 250,000 miles. It's been driven like it was stolen since the day he got it, and it's carried around a full service body the whole time. The motor still runs fine and it pulls real hard, but the accessories are what is killing the truck. Everything around the motor is failing.
I would say, if the motor runs well without any obvious signs of problems, if the transmission shifts well, check over all the accessories and use that as a base-line for an idea on maintenance by the previous owner. My boss was horrible with maintenance and the truck lasted lot longer than it really should have. If the one you're looking at has been taken care of, I would definitely consider it.
well no one can tell you the actual miles you have left on this truck. the 460 will run a long time if its serviced good. not unheard of to get 300k out of one. the tranny being replaced is easy. crawl under there and look at it. does it look clean? if not, not. as for the price, if the body is straight and clean and does not need paint that could be a fair price for a 4x4 with decent tires but it depends on your location in the country, around here that would be high for a 17 year old truck. mileage is another thing no one can tell you. 2 trucks equipped exactly the same will not get the same mileage but i would guess anywhere from 3 to 10 mpg maybe.
Ok, so I bought it, I haven't really got to run it yet, hoever the 60 miles I did run it it sometimes hard shifted if I was going up a hill or had the RPMs rev to high, is this normal? Also, everything looked clean, engine, transmission, everything, except the battery cables which I guess are melted to the battery, anyway thanks for your help.
