97 PSD 350 city owned mechanics utility vehicle should I buy?

first off I have never owned a diesel, checked out powerstrokediesel's youtube vids But but but, stil not sure. Here's the info if some one could offer some advice.

reg cab with a utility box on along both sides are the compartments liike pic below. air compressor under the hood along with hose reel inside one compartment. 44,738 miles on it. couple of holes in drvrs side floor pan. Drw very plain interior had been siting for 1 to 1.5yrs now. old guy is getting out of used car business sons not interested. body lines straight but with a city own vehicle I am going to guess and say the mechanics used this truck for city owned equipment break downs on the road, why else would they have a compressor on board. similar to pic below though not it. Oh the price- 1750.00 cash. But I only looked last sunday never heard it run or start. only 2wd & I would have to discard the utility for a 8' box.

The pictured truck is not the 97, good. I was gonna say, that ain't no 97! I own one. That's a real good price for a psd. Only 44,000 miles is awesome! I would change ALL the fluids and filters, and especially use some injector cleaner in the first few tanks. Keep a spare fuel filter with you, and a spare cps (cam positioning sensor).

These trucks don't have a lot of giddy up with factory tuning, but some modifications can due wonders to these engines. Your truck will likely have a lower geared rearend than an F-350 would normally have since it left the factory as a cab and chasis. That will hurt your mileage a little, but if you plan to do a lot of towing, that would be a big plus. BTW, I don't know if an 8' bed will bolt on to your truck without tire or axle interference. The rear axle on a cab and chasis is shorter than an axle out of an F-350 dually.

For that price I'd go get it right away, and when you get it come on down and see me and I'll trade you a rust free 8' box from an Az truck for your utility box.

You might need to swap axles too. I'm pretty sure that a cab and chasis dually has a shorter axle than a regular dually pickup.

You're right, a cab/chassis does have a narrower frame and shorter axle tubes. But if it has an 8' box it's just a DRW F350 and not a cab/chassis

Cab/chassis wheel base is 3" longer, too, so you'd have to set the stock bed back further.
Odds are if it's a dually with a utility bed, then it's a reg. F-350 p'up, as the cab/chassis look rediculous with a utility bed and the narrower axle.
