I have an 06 4x4 with 3.55lsd rear and 5.4 and a 2" leveling kit with stock 255 70 17s. I can't decide whether to get 265 70 17 or 285 70 17. The first one is about .5 inch bigger than stock and the other is about 1.5 " bigger. I think I would like the looks of the bigger tire but don't want to screw up my gas mileage and performance. Anyone running a similar setup have an opinion?
If you tow at all, stay as close to stock in tire size as you can. If you go more than one size bigger, you won't be happy with your performance until you change gear ratios to something compatible with the larger size tire, and that's expensive. I wouldn't go with the 285's until you can afford to do the gear change as well. Besides not performing well, it's abusive to your transmission to go to that much change in overall final drive ratio.
Yeah I agree, I think it calculates out as a 3.39 rear ratio with the 285 70 17's, if my truck came stock with 3.73's i might consider it, or if I was willing to dish out the cash for a set of 4.10 gears.
I'm running 285's right now, had 265's when I got the truck. To be honest, I couldn't tell a difference powerwise, and if anything it had to help mileage (if driven easily, not hard) because it changed the gearing ever so slightly. I would recomend the 285's, they look a lot better. I am going to install a leveling kit and then go to 35's when I do. I'm sure I'll feel the power difference when I step up that much, but I'll deal with that then. Good luck!
