Fabric Paint
I've never used this stuff.
1. The warning was that "fabric paint don't stick to plastic. OK ... no problems there! But ... does it stick to FABRIC well???
2. Is it a dye ... that gets absorbed into the fabric ... or a paint ... that only goes ON it?
3. Does it wear/rub off?
4. Does it leave an odor? If so does the smell last a long time?
5. Expensive?
6. Y'all got brand names ... and possibly know where I might find it?
Not only am I interested in painting some fabric in the truck ... I'm also wondering about adding some additional color to some of my hunting camo stuff.
I DO take the odd shot now and again!
Most auto parts stores (and wally world too) will carry vinyl/fabric paint. However, the most common brand names that you'll find there are Dupli-Color, and other forum users didn't reccomend it but I've marginal sucess with it. If you recall commenting on my lower door panel pockets in your "waste" thread, those were painted with Dupli-Color vinyl paint. The brand name SEM is held in high regards here, and that's what I was looking for but simply coudn't find it without having to drive 90 min each way. Now a O'Reilly Auto Parts store has it about an hour away, so when I need some I simply call them and have it shipped to a store that's 30 min away.
ALL of the interior of my tuck has been vinyl painted and it's held up well. As with any paint project, the key is in the preparation. Several thin coats vs a few heavy coats.
I know that you asked about "Fabric Paint" specifically, but almost all of the cans that I've seen can be used for both. Dunno if I would recommend painting something that is going to get alot of use/wear such as carpet or a seat though.
Hope that helps at lest some...
If it sprays like a rose, runs like a rose and covers like a rose....( Oh, sorry, I meant paint.... you get my drift.)
I recently have been working on some budget make-overs, and trying to evaluate the most cost-effective detail strategies.
I recently had some gray seats with stains that wouldn't come out completely with cleaning, I honestly didn't find a whole lot of difference between the Dupli-Color Vinyl and Fabric spray and Wal-mart $0.99 gray primer in restoring the seats. If anything, it seemed like the $0.99 primer covered a little better, and anytime either of them required a thick coat, the result was a stiff sand-papery finish that was subject to transfer by rub-off, and it took 3 times as many coats at pretty much 3 times the cost to do it with Dupli-Color.
I've used the SEM on some door panels and it worked well, but honestly the resulting finish has been easier to mar than I expected, and also not a very good match to the original color. There is no way to compare it to the Dupli-Color, as they don't make anything remotely close to the Ford factory blue interior I have.
