Pull the hubs to check them out. Like anything else, an old stock part that hasn't been maintained properly will wear out and need replaced. As for the whining, try replacing the fluid and make sure the system is bled. The factory pumps are notorious for whining when trying to turn on dry ground while not moving.

For the 4lo, put the tranny in neutral with your foot on the brake and try to shift then. I know it's an 88, but if someone monkeyed around with the linkage. If not, then climb under the truck while someone trys to shift it and watch the linkage to see if it's binding or just needs adjusting.

"My 4 wheel drive isent working I put it in 4 high and my front drive shaft spins"
Does this mean in 4high you can crawl under the truck and spin the driveshaft, or while you're driving it spins????????????????? Maybe it wont move and the front driveshaft spins?????

I thought about that too and just guessed.

Try unlocking the hubs, put it in 4wd and drivethe truck forward to make sure the t-case is turning the shaft and not the axle.

It could be your hubs. You should pull them and look at them. Or maybe your transfercase isn't engaging 4x4. As Kjett said, try unlocking the hubs and engaging 4x4 to see if you can spin the driveshaft.

Probably low on fluid. Check the fluid level of your power steering..

Your shifter could be loose. There are two little bolts on it and make sure they're snugged up. You might even have to pull the bolts out and clean out the area where the shifter bolts on. When I got my F-350 it had the same problem, I had to remove the bolts and clean the dirt out because it managed to pack in to the little gap. But after that it shifted fine.

Did the driveshaft lock when your hubs were locked or your transfer case was in 4x4?
If it locks when your in 4x4 with hubs unlocked. Your transfercase is engaging right. Or appears to be and you can focus on the front hubs.

You might just upgrade hubs anyhow, it couldn't really hurt.
And yes, you can find Warn hubs for your truck.

Let us know if your power steering fluid is low and if the low range suggestions helped.

Upgrading never hurts. And if the problem persists, we'll all still be here to help.

As for the power steering, well I didn't even know they needed to be bled. Mine has a leak and went compeltely dry, I just top it off and turn my wheel a few times each way and its good to go.

Yes, on 87 and some 88 the hubs are a flange type. there are no after market replacements out there. i was re-greasing my hubs when the bearrings inside petered out. and nobody can get just the bearings as far as autoparts stores go. i had to go to a bearing store online to get them. If you want after market hubs to re-place the flange type you'll have to change your spindles out with a different year. good luck with your truck.

Do you have the flange type hub..?

Well my truck was made in Canada, so says a sticker when I got it, but that doesn't really mean much.
