I have a 90' 302 EFI in my 86 truck... I have a 500 dollar set of RacTech Headers, and a K&N air intake, and I was thinking straight pipes... no cats, nothin... but it might be too loud... so I might put glass packs or maybe cherry bomb vortext or SOMETHING.... but my question is.. will i lose or gain any power from this exhaust set up? I know the motor is tuned to run on the parts it came with, so if I took all the back pressure and stuff away from it, would it run any crappier? or does more flow always do good? PLEASE I need to know soon im doing this in the next few days.
Headers & free flowing exhaust is allways better on these trucks. Usally 2 1/2 on duels , on single 2 1/2 Y pipe into 3 in pipe . It will be loud with out mufflers ....How big are the primary tubes on the headers ?? ...Lew
Lew52 - does a 1993 F150 302 have exhaust manifold gaskets from the factory? I have a replacement gasket set from auto store - I read that these engines do not have gaskets so I am wondering if I am wasting my time pull passenger side exhaust manifold (3/4 complete) to install a gasket?
So the replacement kit that the autoparts store sold me would basically be useless since these trucks also do not have collector gaskets as well or can I remove the factory exhaust manifold and use the gaskets provided in the kit?
With headers you need gaskets , not sure on the stock manifold ?? I don't use stock manifolds , but if you have the gaskets it should work . Mabee some one that knows the stock manifolds will chime in here & let you know whats better ... Lew
Thank you for your time Lew - I have 2 more bolts to remove - so I will see if the gasket will work. This is a great site - I am about 3 months new. I would take the time to get headers but this is my 17 year sons truck. I have the 94 in the pic - mechanically in awesome shape, body something to be desired.
Ok I have the manifold off - broke not bolts. However I have another question what is the hole at the end of the manifold(passenger side) Has a little plastic plunger type piece that moves up and down with my finger. Should this be closed up or open should something be inserted there? There was nothing there when I removed manifold

Dump the KN air intake. Its worthless since it sucks in hot air. I had the FIPK for a little while and my truck got worse fuel economy.
There aren't any factory exhaust manifold gaskets, but almost everytime you remove one, you need a gasket to prevent leaks. When installing headers, you will definitely need gaskets. I recommend Percy's.
How would it suck in hot air? Im getting a split pipe from the intake manifold and throttle body down to the right or left corner then putting a cone on it... not gonna be hot really... especially during the upcoming canadian winter

Might actually help you during the winter up there, but normally they take in hot underhood air instead of cool air from the grille area that helps performance. The stock Ford intake from the 300/6 or the 460 that gets cold air from the grille area is far superior to a KN cai for bringing cool air to the engine, the 302/351 stock tube intake goes up and over the radiator and is more restrictive.
My truck ran worse with the FIPK in (regardless of cold or hot weather) than it did with a KN replacement drop in filter. Believe it or not it runs the best with a good Motorcraft, Wix, or Purolator filter. With this setup I get the best fuel economy and it runs the best on the highway with the AC on.
Its already been said, but the best setup is to just run the factory air box with the I6/460 intake tube that gets fresh air from behind the headlight. It flows more than enough air for a stock engine and still enough for a mildly built engine. I don't know where the factory air box tube is routed on your 86, but if it gets outside air, I would leave it that way. The tube that is up on top of that radiator is not that great either since the radiator gets hot and it is more restrictive.
The air in the engine bay is warm.
Those open cone filters are exposed and get dirty faster.
I don't like KN anyway, because it lets in more dirt and once it gets dirty it doesn't flow well.
I don't see any point to the other intakes or filters. The CAI, throttle body spacers, and chips are all paper weights.
