Well I get kinda crazy but I have been studying Carb air flow for months and got real intreasted in cold air / ram air induction for my 73 fe. I have some pics here and hope not to bore anyone but it has been kinda fun progressing through this.
I first started with a stock cold air intake off of a 78 400 which by the way bolted right up to my 73. The hole in the radiator shell where it sucks air was not clean so I got out the skinny wheel and opened it up. also the plastic duct was not holding its shape so I made a custom bracket to leep it wide open. Then i just hooked it to the air horn with the standard cloth type duct. I didn't have a stove connection yet. It worked ok but I thought I could do better.
Next I hooked up a stove from a 66 Galaxy and increased the size of the connector duct to 3 " but I couldn't get a air tight fit for true ram air. On the highway a noticeable increase in power and gas mileage. Now I have gone to my next generation..
The stock mechanical actuator for the stove was a sticking piece of junk so Now I have gone to a filter housing off of a 80 302. This gave me a Vac operation, heat switch and bleed valve. This is the hot ticket plus the intake hole is the same as the FE. Then I found a good air horn with vac actuator but from a 76 300 6. The inlet was necked down.
Out came the skinny wheel and I cut off the neck down and fitted a intake fitting off a 68 390. So I have it all mocked up and cleaned up and primered tomorrow I will give it the final paint.
I am real happy and this baby will floww big time. It will be under full control and air tight for a good ram air effect. Sorry this is so long. Here is some pics of the new one.

Here is that area where I have since cut open the scoop hole. Also the ram hole with the valve inside. Last look at the 302 airfilter housing inside it is smaller in diameter but I have a K&N for it and I liked the air diverter in it. The smaller size also makes it easyier to adjust the carb with the cleaner on it.
Next step as I am moving along. I keep making improvements to the throat size and flow capability as I go. Next I will move to the improved pressure plenum I am building out of sheet metal. I just didn't like the stock one as it doesn't have very cleann flow and the new one will be 4" all the way to the carb. The carb air heater port is increased to 2.5 " the same size as the stove outlet so I can make it more air tight for better temp blending in winter. Here it is sitting on my new 2100 1.33v autolite carb. The spacer will be custom cut and over 2" thick. Dual ports into a open beveled plenum chamfered on the edges. Crap I can't wait to see what I can get out of this 360. Hey anything is an improvement.
All I can say is with my 1969 428CJ with Ram Air, when I removed the vacuum operated air valve and ran the thing open all the time the mileage went up almost 2 mpg. This may not sound like much except the car normally got 11 mpg and 13 was a major improvement (the 4.30 rearend was not a mileage maker option). That's almost a 20 percent increase. When I cold/ram aired my 1990 Escort GT the mileage increased 2 mpg (32 to 34 mpg) also but there was already a semi-cold air system on it to start with.

This one will lie right down in there and not stick out and will flow wayyy more air with ice and cold weather control. If it doesn't work I'll rip it out, but it will. Nothing new just a few improvements. I hope to see some mileage increase on the highway. A 360 flows much less air than a 428CJ so I don't need as much to make an improvement. Any way it's my dime and my time. Havin fun ....wishin there was sun....

Drinking again??? Riderman your just following me from one thread to another. Are you insecure? Where I come from you would be tagged kinda creepy! I am not sure what your issue is. Anyone can see what I've done with my air cleaner. I have explained what I am doing with it. It is basic and I am just having fun with it. No brain surgery here. I am just a regular guy who would like you to go away. I have spent 30 years working in the field as a HVAC Refrigeration and building controls tech. I have Oregon and Washington State electrical licenses I am a Washington State Electrical Administrator and Electrical Board Certified Electrical Trainer. That is how I got my teaching job from experiance. I also support this forum and I enjoy my time spent here. Now get the hell off my case!PS I also like Ford trucks. So shut your drunken beer hole!! This paranoia about me chasing you around the FTE forum is in your head. I allway's learn from people's dis-agreements here on several topics...it brings discusion from several people and their point of views. Bear, please dont put yourself in the same catagory as this mis-informed individual. You DO know how that circuit operates, right? If you know, then you know that your statement is impossible unless the valve was stuck closed. If the valve was open, as it should be after normal operating temp, removing it had minor impact on air flow, based on the rest of the breathers restrictive design. Ram air from a hood design has been proven not to be effective unless you are traveling above x miles an hour. Now someone is welding together pieces of stock breathers..I'll stop. This thead is a joke. No kidding. I suprises me that anyone can believe it, let alone try to prove it. Then slam a guy for pointing it out....geesh, yea, I'll have another beer and watch the show..
