I have a buddy that is willing to swap me rims from his truck to mine. I have a 99 with the 12mm studs and the polished steels rims, he has the 14mm FX4 rims.
Im wanting some advice on what i would have to do to my rims to swap them on his truck. I know his will go on myne with no issues as the rims are hub centric. But i doubt my rims will slide over his studs. Or will they? Can i buy a drill bit and just bore myne out a tad to make them work?
Okay well im pretty sure drilling out my 99 rim wont be an issue. But i just realized that the FX4 rims done use the same lug nut. Its a tapperd nut. So now i need find the 14mm nut that goes to steel rims. And i need to find a 12mm nut that is taperd to fit the aluminum rim. Any idea where i can find these. I know where i can get some of the 14mm nuts no problem. The 12 mm taperd though might be more difficult.
The Factory FX4 lugnuts are NOT tapered... They are pretty similar to the 2nd Gen Lightning lugnuts. They are longer chrome washer style lugnut. If he has tapered on there now then they are the wrong ones, no 97-03 F-150 came from the factory with tapered lugnuts.
I looked a few years ago for 12mm FX4 nuts and all I found was a $100 set from Ford so I just kept my stock lug nuts with the FX4 rims, not even noticeable unless you get down and look directly in the hole. As for 12mm rim on 14mm studs I wouldn't drill them out then give them to someone else, just asking for major lawsuit issues IMO.
Good i will do some checking then. I know that i can find some of the 14mm nuts like my truck currently uses for the other guy to use on my rims.
Im not to worried about taking out a little metal with a drill either. I dont like the idea about drilling out the stud holes, but really its just a little metal and there shouldnt make any difference as long as i get the tolerances right.
Well i decided to do a test fit with one wheel tonight, and found some suprising results.
My 12mm stud rims do fit on a 14mm stud. so i went ahead and installed them on the guys truck. His nuts are to long to put the wheel caps on so i will have to get new short lugs for him. but my lugs did fit inside of the FX4 rims with out any issue, thanks galaxie.
So just a simple lug for the 03 and the swap will be complete. Thank god i didnt have to drill anything out.
