I got a loud clunk that occurs on hard cornering or modest deacceleration. It seems to happen about 75% of the time.
I checked, U joints, Front wheel bearings, exhaust, spring bushings, and the TTB raidius arm bushings.
Its an 85 F150, 4WD, 4SPD, 300.
Anyone else got an idea?
Where do you hear the noise coming from?
Can you "feel" the noise as well ... like in the floor with your feet ... or in the steering wheel ... maybe a pedal ... or in one of the shifters? Being mostly deaf ... I've had to depend on "feeling" a noise rather then "hearing" it. I was REAL good at picking out a bad axle bearing in a FWD car compared to many of my fellow mechanics who could hear perfectly well.
Does it change when you have a passenger aboard?
If not ... do you and your passenger agree where the noise "seems" to be coming from?
How did you check your U joints? I ALWAYS used two pairs of BIG Channel lock pliers ... one to hold the drive side of the shaft ... the other to hold the "driven" side ..pull together or push apart ALWAYS turn up a bad cardan joint.
Looked at the engine mounts a few weeks back they are fine.
The trany "mount" is only about 9Mo old. I will check the crossmember.
On the U joints I just used a good firm grip. Did the twist test, the wiggle, and the four way side to side.
The sound is from either underneath the bed or behind the cab. I may check the bed bolts as the PO lifted the whole thing 3" with spacers.
Hope it's nothing serious but keep in mind these trucks do like to rust. Do a good thorough inspection of the frame and suspension components. Take a look at things like spring hangers, shock mounts, frame cross-members and the radiator core support, they're all rust prone and could make said noises. Good luck.
