MORE!!...Rear End Troubles......

Hey guys, been awhile since i've been on,been running hard at work since we got back from RRE. Anyway, some of you might remember me talking about a slight rear end vibration at certains speeds on the highway, now, driving this AM,when I hit the brakes I heard and felt a thump/pop,so I pulled into a parking lot to check. While turning(doesn't have to be all the way to lock, but turning kinda sharp),I'm getting a lock-up like the front hubs are locked in,but theyr'e not, while turning in the paved parking lot the rear wheels drag/release/chirp also like the front would if its in four wheel drive. You can feel it pop when your turning from one road to another, and it has also made a few"very loud and hard pops" too.Any thoughts would be appreciated greatly,
Phil...p.s...i've ebeen so busy i haven't even had time to renew my supporter status...lol...so yall just work with me ok...lol

To me, it sounds like the pinion gears. Good Luck Phil, it isnt that bad of a job.

Have you physically reached around your front tires to verify the front stub axle will turn freely when in the 2WD position?

Are you describing what you would feel if you had too little (or no) "friction modifier" in the rear differential?

Yeah Pop,thats the first thing I checked.I made sure the hubs were unlocked, spun the front drive shaft, and both axles and they both spin freely.Like I said, you can hang your head out the window while turning, and the rear wheels grab and chirp, and by the way,I changed the diff.fluid to Royal Purple about a year ago,and I don't drive it that much.

After a little more checking,it acts like its got a locker in it,binding up when you turn.

Will it do it with your foot off the go pedal? or does it only do it accelerating?

Phil, sounds like you spider gears, the popping and chirping your hearing, had the same thing, you have some teeth that are chipped or missing on your gears. I had too replace two sets in my wifes Expy, like Pat said, if were talking about the same thing, not a bad job at all.

Well,I don't know Scott,if I gas on it while say like in a parking lot,it grabs and the rear tires spin/grab,this is also going along with the other issue I was having before,it would vibrate on the highway if you wasn't letting off the gas,but wasn't gassing on it either,ya know kinda floating keeping your speed.Yeah Mike, thats what I was thinking too,its like having a locker in there but not...lol

Whoa..... Slow down. You shouldn't need to do much of ANY of that.

First of all, since it's only a year on the Royal Purple, you might want to consider saving it in a REAL clean drain pan. That's $80 worth of gear grease that's relatively new. If you can't keep it completely contaminant-free, though, toss it.

You're going to need to drain it, however, 'cause we need a peek at the inside before we go much further.

10-4 on the re-using the Royal Purple,my company bought out two other trucking companies in Aug.,so we have been very busy since then(not that im complaining....Christmas is around the corner right...lol),so its probably gonna be awhile before I can actually tear into it,probably over the Thanksgiving holiday.I'm just trying to get my head around all the info I can before then.
Thanks......Phil
