Just purchased a 2009 F150 Lariat CC with 6.5 long bed. After the addition of a topper, sprayed on Bed Liner, my mileage just went to heck. I love this truck. I am thinking of getting a Cold Air Intake system for it. Does anyone have experience with K&N or AirAid cold air intake system on their truck. I would also like to put dual exhaust system to make the engine breath better. This would get me more horsepower and perhaps a tad increase in mileage.
i would stay away from k&n on these newer trucks. the oil and MAF sensor dont get along to well. i have had experience with this and so have others on here. volant or S&B would be the way to go for an intake.
Thank you so much 04XLTRUNNER. I was skeptic on K&N but I was looking more to the Airaid system. I think the filter doesn't have the oil coating in it. I need to ask Airaid for a more detailed spec.
If you do a search for air filter test on the web, you can ind a lot of information. IMHO, the CAI aftermarket kits are not worth the $$!!! The Wix HP oem replacement unit flows 98% of K&N, but the filtering is much better and there is much less air turbulence past the filter- meaning the air is flowing much straighter and faster.
Unless the system has been designed specifically for the application, there is little chance if any for improvement. I have yet to see any dyno test that shows actual hp or mileage improvement from any mfg.
You can certainly mod your own with a ram air design that I used or the other mods posted on the board that cost as little as $15.

You are 100% rite on the oil on the foam airfilters not getting along and ruining the MAF sensors. However when running oiled foam filters of a differant brand (not K&N) I found a nice way to clean the MAF and all was good about every 10K miles. Now with running K&N, we used to use them and they filter the air about as good as a nylon sock lol. just keeps the big hoppers out and cuts the rings all to $%#@. But people think due the tremendous sucking sound they are going faster and have more power, not so just hook the sob to the dyno and you will find K&N sucks big time lol!
Unless you add forced induction no CAI is going to make a noticeable difference. Like another user posted, the louder noise is a placebo effect that it is faster.
It surely is a pleasure to get so many response on my inquiry. T%hank you ALL for the advice and info. Can anyone make a suggestion on how I can improve the mileage and power in this new truck? I am new to truck mods and doesn't quite know where to start. Thanks again for the info and sure everyones reply is greatly appreciated
anything you install to increase mpg or hp will be a waste of money for it will never pay for it self
but that doesn't mean not to buy them or install them, just don't thing your going to see any huge improvement
things i would say always on a trucks to do list get a tonneau cover or cap, it will keep stuff in the bed dry and safe mainly and might add a mpg gain
a nice bolt on cat back, get great sound mainly and maybe 5hp
and a good drop in air filter like afe dry flow will save cost by cleaning ang reuseing
lariatcc,
just for your info the Airaid systems do use oil just like the K&N. I have had the Airaid on my truck for 30,000 miles and love it. No problems to date, just dont over oil it. I also check the intake tube once in a while and check for oil residue, just to be on the safe side. Just don't let the sun see the filter, it is sensitive to it and changes the properties of the oil and increases your chances of the oil meeting up with the MAF sensor. Just my .10.

Yes, agree 100%. No such thing as 'cold air' intake. Marketing term. Ambient air intake is the correct term.
