I am just curious what kind of rpm you guys are pulling trailers with up grades? I dont have a egt gauge but how warm will a stock truck get pulling heavy loads up some steep grades? My truck is with my brother right now pulling a 7k trailer (having oil issues too). He called one day and said he wasnt too impressed with the diesel, so I asked him what rpm he was pulling. He said he would pull only up to 2500 max. I said heck rev it up too 2900+ and let me know what he thought. Well now I am kinda wondering if I should have said that. He said it pulled much better, but i dont think he was all that impressed yet. Any way, so will these things get way too hot pulling grades at 3k?
oh, yes, they could get to hot, but It would be hard to tell.
probably not with that small of a load unless he had his foot to the floor the whole way up the hill.
They will definitely get hot. I ran mine up a long grade with the throttle on the floor and I melted the shifter boot. After that, I always check the floor board to see how hot it is getting.
Stock trucks can easily get to 1200 EGT when loaded heavy or towing. Anytime you are at the point where more pedal pressure doesn't get you more speed/RPM you can bet you're pretty warm. I like to pull hills in the 2500-2800 range.
So its actually easier on the engine at 3k with your foot in it verses 2200-2500 with your foot in it?
That's right. I hope you guys have a pyro gauge. I pulled 24k over the mountains and my right foot does what the gauge does. Over 1200* let off a little, under 1200* give it the gas. I defiantly agree with the rpm's. I downshift and keep it up to 27 to 30 range. Its a battle you have to stay on top of or you'll be down to 20mph is 1st gear. I'll even block traffic once in awhile to avoid being caught behind a semi going 20-30mph.
