I just got a 94 F150 302, the air pump is making lots of noise. I was thinking of taking it off.. I have done some research and some say that the the motor will run like crap, and others say it will run fine if the system is removed.. I would pull the pump and the valves with it.. the way I understand the system, is that it pushes air into the back of the heads when the motor is cold to help warm up the cats, than after the engine is warm, it diverts the air into the exhaust pipe between the cats. Is this true? So if i took the pump, air tubes, and lines off, but left the electric switches for the vac lines in place(capped off the lines that went to the air tube valves) would it throw codes? Would it still run right?
I had the same problem on my 95 302 it has a really bad tick but I did a head swap to the gt40's and I gutted my old one while i was down there and it seems to be fine. I have straight pipes from my headers so it dosent feed in to anything anyway. The other thing that might work is to measure for a shorter belt and route around the pump.

But deleting the smog pump all together is a real pain with sealing up the back of the heads and everything else. If you still have cats then I would reccomend either taking it very carefully apart and greasing it or deleting it

I have no cats. I went thru the mud and broke the air pump which took the serp. belt leaving me stranded at work. I bought a Ford Racing Off road idler pulley, designed to take the place of it. Only problem is its for a 302 so an inch shorter belt is required. Has run great since then. Have part numbers if needed.
