Stancor GPR

I was just wondering why I should use the Stancor?
I know everyone uses it and it is better, but what actually makes it better, and are there any potential downfalls to using it?

I just want to make sure I know what I am doing before I do it, if that makes sense?

Thank you for any input!

The rating on the stancor is 200 Amp continuous and 600 Amp inrush. In other words, it's built for war.

It's built of better materials (silver alloy versus copper), it's current-carrying capacity is higher, it reliability is far superior, it's coil draws way less current through the PCM's current sink (thus less excess heating of the PCM).

It's just going to last many, many times as long as the original.

It's bigger. Bigger's better.

I switched to the Stancor because of everything I read about it on this site and my stock one **** the bed. It's finally colder again and it starts as fast as it does in the middle of summer.

No down falls. Put it in and it will be in there for a LONG time.

I went through three napa replacements and i finally had a enough.

Here is Guzzle's write-up:

Welcome to guzzle's Stancor GPR replacement Mod Web Page

There's a link to Mouser Electronics which was Guzzle's source. I just bought mine 2 months ago from them, and while the price has gone up since the original write-up, they were still the cheapest and it came quickly. Here's the relevant text from that write-up:

"The Stancor Contactor (I'll call it a GPR) can be found at numerous sites on the internet but I ordered mine from Mouser Electronics (part number 802-586-902) for $44.74 (Nov-2007)."

Looks like everyone has the specs, and part numbers listed. And I agree with all of it. I also will have to add that I have had mine in for a few years, and over 75k miles, and it still works fine. That is pretty hard for a OEM gpr to also be able to say. Most people do not notice how poorly their OEM GPR is working, untill replaced with a stancor.

The original relay was too lite duty and failed usually just out of warranty. Ford now offers a better replacement which I have but the Stancors are rated for even higher amps and should last a long time without failing. DC is harder to switch then AC and requires larger surface are contacts and a faster acting mechanism or other design changes to limit arcing when the contacts open.

Think of it like this:

You bought a Super Duty for their strength & reliability. You opted for the 7.3 for it's strength & reliability. The Stancor GPR is the Super Duty, while the OEM is more like a Ranger. Good & gets the job done, but no where near as strong or long-lasting.

Rangers seem to run forever.

586-902 Stancor General Purpose / Industrial Relays

Buy it from them. As a bonus, you'll receive a phone book size catalog from them every couple of months.

I believe somewhere I read that BOSS the plow manufactures has the same relay for a fraction of the cost. I found that out after I bought mine from there.
