I have a 91 f150 4.9 5 speed. Under load it makes a wooshing sound like an exhaust leak, but it stops when i shift up a gear and starts again about ten seconds under load again. Odd part is that it does not do this all the time. seems like a valve opening and closing any ideas. Also i need a new shifter boot where do I find one thanks

I think my '88 F-150 did this. Try experimenting with the fan speed of your heater blower. If you have a vacuum leak, the blend door of the heater box can change position, when your vacuum level changes, due to different throttle positions (i.e., under load) and can redirect air to either the defrost or floor or some combination, which can make a noticeable change in the in-cab sounds.
IOW, if you do hear it with the fan on High, and don't with it off, then that's what it is.
You definitely do not want that. It maybe be that your truck needs a tune up. Try running mid grade or supreme fuel for a tank full and see if it goes away.
mine did that also, i though it was something in the vacuum system.
as for the shift boot, the OE one was alot. i think over $150. so i picked up some hot rod one from autozone for $15 and put it in. it worked, looked OK up close, better from a distance.
this is the first fit. after this i took it off, made it level, polished it up and put it all back.
I figured the noise out. My cats were broken and occationaly blocking the outlet. More power now, I have a short comute so I never really get into the gas.
