so i was wounder has anyone messed with either a f450 or f550 from 94 to 05 with changeing the rear ends or trans to get more top end or added a OD unit or anything like that?
well the truck tops out a 80 in overdrive and well thats fine when your pulling a trailer around town but on highway you can just get flat ran over so just need some more speed with having to regear the front and rear i have a two speed laying around that i can use it came out of a old ford big truck like a f-700 or something 6 wheeler dump truck but i have to take the air brakes off and switch it over to hydrolic if i can and all that stuff and the case is about the same size expect for the neck of the hogs head
Check the ratios in that two speed. Chances are, you'll be going slower. There are multiple ratios, including 6.xx and 8.xx combinations. An F700 is going to have had 9.00 or 10.00 rubber, much taller than your truck, and the gearing would be much lower to compensate. Plus, you'll be running two different types of wheels.
well i was going to switch out the gears with some others i got laying around its just busting them all open to see what i got i know theres one rear laying around thats a 4 something and 3 something but i know it wount work cause of the hogs head but i think i can use the guts in the other its just draging stuff out and finding out what i got and dont got i was mainly asking is has anyone done it and how it truned out for them. and i just dont fill like shelling out 2 grand plus for a over drive unit that i still have to cut and fap to make work cause all the ones i have found are for the tail end and my trans is the odd ball of all the ones and when i put a new transfer case in it man i was over a month finding one that would work cause of the splining in it i could get the bolt pattern right but not the splines
You would probably be better off buying a new truck if you want to try and stick a rear axle from an F700 under there. Some things to consider: Finding a suitable front axle gear set to match. Changing drivelines. You said changing the brakes to hydraulic, there's a lot more to it than that. There is a huge difference in the size of the axle tubes. All of this would add up to a major engineering mess and a huge expense if it even possible.
