Using SeafoamŽ?

with a question about SeafoamŽ. Read the other day that somebody said DO NOT put it in your tank. Also saw one a couple weeks(?) ago from someone who had put it in their tank & said it helped clean it out. Am confused , have never used it before & don't want to damage anything. Also wondered, is it different from GumoutŽ ( or other similar fuel cleaners ) ? Third thing I've read about pouring it through your power brake hose ( while engine is running ). Brings me back to question 2 & fuel cleaners, shortly after purchase, put a bottle in each tank & haven't burnt one tank off yet. Should I try that whenever I get Old Rusty back ( SeafoamŽ ) or will the other stuff be enough? Old Rusty is a '91 302. Did that as more of a preventative maintenance than for a problem, will be using HeetŽ whenever he comes back with the temperature dropping & things turning wet. Any problems with mixing the two?

Ive put both in within a day or two of eachother. I use Seafoam. Its really the only one I do trust to use. I dont use it in my oil but usually put it in tank every few months and have put it into vacuum booster hose. I believe the Heet stuff is basically just alcohol for drying up moisture.

i have been selling parts for over 15 years and have never heard of seafoam causing any problems. the company makes a good product. only cleaner out there that does a better job is one by gumout called regane. it is the most powerfull FI cleaner on the shelf today.

Seafoam will do the same thing as HEET and is fine to put in the tank. In fact, I have to put a can in the Z for the winter.

What you probably won't want to do is put it in the crankcase. If you do, you'll need to change the oil within 100 miles or so, and if your internals are really carbon-ed up, you might get something breaking loose.

Half a can in the vac booster line and half a can in a tank isn't a bad way to go.

The can will tell you to disable the "smog" pump when pulling it through vaccum lines... Other wise you should be fine.

Dont completely submerge your booster hose is a can of seafoam though. I always pour it into a cup or something and let the motor sip it out.

So if I run it through the power brake hose, I should pull the belt while I do it? Flushed the oil with some stuff ( Made by GunkŽ I think ). I've used that before, it's a 5 minute deal. Pour it in, idle 5 minutes & drain. Don't drive with it in.

The person that mentioned it was bad also indicated it was used on a 150000 race car. So it probally goes through allot of parts and I dont think sea foam was its down fall.

Couldn't remember where here I read it. Went back to look & it wasn't where I thought it was. Seem to remember what you said about a race car now. Thanks everybody for your replies. Remember faintly a lawn mower shop where I used to work started putting like 1 cap ( not cup ) full in the tank on a mower when they did a tune up on it. Never heard of anybody coming back & complaining now that I think about it. Never tried it before & have been reading on here about a lot of people using it & just wanted to check.

Wolfsmurf, thanks for the reply. Have never heard of the other stuff. Just use regular GumoutŽ or whatever. Think I'll try the Seafoam on The Beast since I still don't have Old Rusty. Also your sig. line is the one I wanted to remember the other day. Knew it was something about Volkswagens, couldn't remember what.

yes seafoam is the only thing i will use, ive used lots of injector cleaners and the suck made by gunk but it just not as good as sea foam

1/2 can in the brake booster line while running, shut it off, rest in the tank wait 5-10 mins fire it back up and watch it smoke!...then i usually let it idle till the smoke clears, but for a few weeks after the treatment you will still get some smoke when you fire up, not nearly as much though

when i used it on the 302 it did that truck wonders, thing is getting close to 300 000 KM so it was pretty bad

i put it in through the brake booster before i have to get it inspected (we have emissions testing here) the numbers are so low they dont even come close to the limits. i have never put it in the oil. but ive been wanting to put the seafoam trans tune in the power steering and flush it out.

This doesn't have to go through the smog test due to it's age ( '91 ). Just wanted to clean it up & make sure everything's ready to go. Didn't even know they had a trans. version. Will have to check that out.

Just saw that at The Zone this A.M. " on sale " think about $4 or $5 a bottle. Will have to try that when Old Rusty finally graduates.
